Yesterday, I was invited to a small event at my friend's house. It was a Maulid celebration, a celebration similar to the one I've had before, where I prepared boxed rice. This time, we were invited to enjoy a variety of special dishes at my close friend's house.
There weren't many guests, just four of us, but I arrived early. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and immediately prepared the signature dish for the Maulid celebration: nasi kulah (rice wrapped in banana leaves) and a tray filled with various dishes. This is a tradition of honoring guests in our area. Guests are served various dishes on a tray, then enjoyed with nasi kulah.
What is nasi kulah?
Of course, many people will ask what it is. Bukulah is a regional term meaning rice wrapped in banana leaves. Uniquely, the rice is shaped like a pyramid, or triangle, then wrapped in a banana leaf and tied with a skewer.

Bukulah is often considered a traditional rice dish, in which the rice is served in banana leaves. The aroma of the leaves makes it even more distinctive, and this rice dish is usually served to guests at special occasions, such as during the month of Maulid, or to entertain guests at weddings, and many other occasions.

This rice dish is known for its distinctive aroma, the aroma of banana leaves that have been wilted over fire. This gives off a quite authentic leaf aroma and enhances the flavor of the rice. The rice becomes denser and safer from bacteria, even keeping it from spoiling easily.
All the dishes are now served, so it's time to try them all. I've completely failed my diet today, so I chose the smallest rice dish so I could try a variety of dishes.

The menu is quite varied, including sambal goreng hati (fried liver with chili sauce), curried free-range chicken, semur ayam (chicken stew), sauteed Acehnese shrimp curry, boiled salted egg, fried vermicelli, Kalasan fried chicken, and finally, vegetable soup.

I took the time to photograph each dish individually; I love capturing everything about food so I can share it with you. Almost all the dishes are the same as the ones I make. Of course, everyone has different preferences for spices, and the flavors will differ from my recipe.

All the flavors were very different from any recipe I've ever made, but there was one dish that I really liked: the Kalasan fried chicken. The spices were delicious, the chicken cooked evenly, and the Kalasan spices were very savory. When I asked my friend who cooked this, she smiled, "It's her sister." My friend can't cook, and inevitably, she doesn't understand cooking. Hehe, I think it was very difficult to exchange ideas about recipes with her.

So, I added all the dishes I was going to eat to the triangle rice. I added a few dishes without realizing it, and my plate was already full.

I really liked all the dishes, but the one thing that didn't catch my attention was the clear soup, which I'm not a fan of. Thank you for the meal; I'm happy to share the menu from my experience visiting my friend's house. We really enjoyed this gathering, sharing many stories.
