[Movie] Run, Sweetheart, Run (2020): Can You Save Yourself? [Eng / Esp]

.... English Version....

Run, Sweetheart, Run (2020): Can You Save Yourself? I’ve seen many survival-themed movies; however, I think this film broke the mold. Honestly, this supernatural thriller has it all: horror, suspense, mystery, psychological depth—and above all, it’s addictive. In that sense, Run, Sweetheart, Run (2020) has proven to be a delightful experience for fans of these genres—myself included. I say this because, without a doubt, the story draws us in from the very first moment we start watching, and let me tell you—there’s not a single dull moment, because, as I said before, the action is intense from the start; even the quiet moments are so intriguing that there’s no room for boredom. All of this is possible thanks to the direction of Shana Feste, who—by presenting situations that could be everyday occurrences—manages to connect us with the experiences women might face when a seemingly comfortable situation turns into a completely dire one. Shana’s first foray into horror turned out masterfully.

In other words, just as the protagonist at one point feels trapped by a deception, we feel the same way, because we’re all exposed to these kinds of situations; you might ask, “But is there something even darker there?” It’s true; but we’re talking about how we might be with someone in a magical place, and that person—who seems wonderful, polite, and attractive—changes rapidly, turning that moment and that magical place into a terrifying encounter. And if you manage to escape, a world awaits you where every corner is mysterious and fraught with danger. All of this unfolds in Run, Baby, Run, where something so tense awaits us that you won’t even have a chance to go to the bathroom. Every scene is fast-paced, dynamic, and filled with absolute tension; each of us will run alongside Cherie, only to be stunned by the excellent climax—twists at every turn and suspense at its best.

In this story that pushes us to the brink of total psychological collapse, we see Cherie (Ella Balinska)—a young, beautiful law student who appears angelic and submissive, but who, in moments of crisis, undergoes an incredible transformation in order to survive. She pulls it off brilliantly and naturally; her anguish truly seeps into our minds. The antagonist, Ethan (Pilou Asbæk)—a handsome, attractive, and well-mannered man—makes a pleasant impression; his performance is magnetic and menacing when it needs to be. I can’t tell you more because you have to discover the rest for yourself; there’s not a single wasted moment, and his naturalness is lethal. Now, without taking anything away from the other characters, we can’t overlook the person responsible for driving the plot forward: James (Clark Gregg). He turns out to be somewhat mysterious and complicit, forcing the protagonist to run—hehehehe.

Now, without further ado, we have the beautiful Cherie, who is a law student and works at a law firm where James is her boss. She’s facing a conflict at the firm, but she’s told there’s a solution. At work, Cherie is a secretary, and as the day winds down, she runs into a small problem with James’s schedule: it’s his anniversary, and he also has a scheduled appointment with a client. He calls her over and practically forces her to attend the appointment or meeting with the mysterious client. She has no choice but to accept; she gets ready, makes herself look even more beautiful, and a car takes her to the home of Ethan, who is the client. One small detail: Cherie is on her period—it’s an important detail, and you’ll realize why; at the beginning, we notice that some girls have gone missing.

At first glance, Cherie is struck by Ethan; she walks into the house, they have a drink, they flirt—everything seems strangely normal, but Cherie doesn’t suspect a thing; she has no reason to. They go out to dinner; everything goes perfectly. They have fun and explore the city. That date could logically lead to romance and ends up at Ethan’s place; however, less than five minutes after they’re inside, they hear screams, banging, and cries of distress. Suddenly, the door bursts open, and Cherie runs out screaming for help, completely terrified; she heads to a few houses, but no one helps her. Run, sweetheart, run; she has no choice but to run all over the city looking for someone to help her, but to make matters worse, she’s arrested.

While in jail, she meets another woman who, seeing Cherie’s desperation, tries to support her. But when they start talking, Cherie mentions some details that alarm the other woman, who becomes distraught because she claims the same thing happened to her friend—who is now missing—but she gives Cherie a clue: she must find the first lady. Likewise, Ethan seems to know everyone and shows up at the police station to threaten Cherie; he proposes a dangerous game to her, offering her a chance to save her life. The film is certainly synonymous with intense suspense, mystery, and terror; Cherie is set free, and the game begins. Once again, Run, Baby, Run takes you all over Los Angeles; every corner, every street, is utterly terrifying, and the guy pops up everywhere. Now, who—or what—is this guy? Will Cherie be able to save herself? Does James have anything to do with all this? Undoubtedly, you’ll have to discover the answers to these and other questions in this electrifying film.

The entire plot is set in the city of Los Angeles—a bright, dynamic, romantic city full of luxury and tall buildings. But in the blink of an eye, it turns into a terrifying prison, where every space becomes a deadly trap; there is no escape, creating total paranoia. The cinematography and sound design complement a terrifying chase, making us feel as hunted as the protagonist; the music is fantastic and also seeps into our minds in a way that’s, if you will, toxic—there are rhythms that evoke paranoia and others that seem harmless but ultimately create deep tension; we simply feel as if we’re on the edge of an abyss.

Setting aside the dangerous game that unfolds within the plot, the film invites us to reflect on issues present in society. Above all, it emphasizes the power that men wield over women, attempting to impose a form of machismo that threatens women’s safety. Furthermore, it also shows how people can become accomplices to those monsters who violate the integrity of others, simply to satisfy their sick desires. In short, this film definitely presents a tense, uncomfortable, and addictive dynamic that taps into the social fabric of a community that is often intolerant. It’s a film that’s easy to direct and act in, and it truly fulfills its goal of entertaining us right up to the very last second—with unexpected twists that leave us stunned and wanting more. Best regards, and see you soon.
