Now, when it comes to cinema, let’s enjoy a film directed by David Cronenberg—a filmmaker whose lens doesn’t focus on showing terrifying elements that appear out of nowhere, but rather whose narrative has always sought to reveal the terror that originates deep within the human being. We can see this in a film that, in my view, gave new meaning to drama, mystery, suspense, science fiction, and body horror—I’m referring to the 1986 film The Fly.
We know this isn’t the only version; the original was released in 1958, followed by two sequels. This is a remake, but I believe it was hailed as a huge success at the time. In that sense, and without fear of being wrong—and this is my personal opinion—it’s a cult classic; in fact, I think it goes beyond that, because the content presented in the film is worth discussing, analyzing, and internalizing—about how fragile the human mind and body can be when we realize that terror lies not only in what happens, but also in what we can truly choose to keep out of our lives. It’s a must-see film, and as I said, it leaves a very profound message.

The film features a cast of top-tier actors; for one, Jeff Goldblum plays the unsociable and arrogant scientist Seth Brundle. His performance is excellent, and he has always had great charisma as an actor—and this time, he was flawless. Every gesture, every word, every action is carried out with complete naturalness. But that’s not all; alongside Jeff, we have the “Iron Lady” Geena Davis playing Veronica Quaife, a journalist seeking recognition. She’s another impeccable character, and we all know her—her acting is incredibly natural.
It all starts at a party attended by scientists and journalists; a conversation ensues between Seth and Veronica, and the scientist’s arrogance is immediately apparent. Veronica just wants some good news for Partícula magazine, and Seth tells her he has a project—the best one yet—that none of the people present can match. She doesn’t believe him, but Seth insists and convinces her to go to his lab for a demonstration. Verónica agrees, but she has her doubts. From there, wonderful and spectacular events unfold for science; it seems she has achieved her goal. However, without giving away any more details, the following question arises: Is this a success for science, or just a way to demonstrate that being God can be beneficial or devastating? That’s what you’ll have to discover as the plot unfolds.
As for the setting and cinematography, to me they function as another character, since they must convey the coldness of the spaces, which evoke in the viewer a sense of claustrophobia, fear, and suspense. Although it is a laboratory, it is a place cut off from everything and everyone—an isolation necessary for the events to unfold with complete naturalness. The special effects, while certainly spectacular for their time, are actually better than some of today’s effects. Every stage of the transformation is unique, and the details are visible at a glance.
Now, regardless of the terror and mystery this movie might evoke, the message is very clear: no one can be so arrogant as to presume to change the course of human history by believing themselves to be God. There will always be room for error, and we can never know how many lives must be sacrificed to achieve success. On the other hand, it also invites us to reflect on the physical changes we may experience in our own lives. Beyond comparing ourselves to what happens in the movie, we can draw parallels regarding how we age, how we get sick, and—as I said before—the terror we might feel at the possibility of one day losing the one we love most. En tal sentido, sin temor a equivocarme y es mi opinión personal; es un clásico de culto, es más, creo que va más allá de eso, porque el contenido que se presenta en la película es digno de discutir, de analizar e internalizar, sobre lo frágil que puede ser la mente y el cuerpo humano al pensar que el terror no solo está en lo que sucede, sino en lo que verdaderamente podemos llegar a alejar de nuestras vidas. Una película que debes ver y como dije, deja un mensaje muy profundo.

Cada gesto, cada palabra, cada acción es llevada acabo con total naturalidad. Pero eso no es todo; porque a lado de Jeff, tenemos a la dama de hierro Geena Davis encarnando a Veronica Quaife; una periodista en busca de consagración. Un personaje también impecable y todos la conocemos, su manera de actuar es demasiado natural.
Todo inicia en una fiesta donde disfrutan científicos y periodistas; se entabla una conversación entre Seth y Verónica, donde la arrogancia del científico se nota a simple vista. Verónica solo quiere una buena noticia para la revista partícula y Seth le dice que el tiene un proyecto, el mejor de todos y que ninguno de los presentes podrá igualar. Ella no lo cree pero Seth insiste y la convence de ir a su laboratorio para una prueba. Verónica accede, pero tiene sus dudas y estando en el laboratorio, que para nada se parece a uno; Seth muestra su proyecto y Verónica solo dice que lo que vé son casetas telefónicas. Algo hace falta en este proyecto y conversando con Verónica, se le ocurre la idea de experimentar con un pedazo de carne, antes hace algunos arreglos. Se realiza el experimento y funciona, pero al comer la carne se siente sintética y de allí solo queda hacer una cosa. Programar la computadora para que haga exactamente lo que se debe hacer y funcione. A partir de allí, se originan eventos maravillosos y espectaculares para la ciencia, parece que ha logrado su cometido; sin embargo, para no dar más detalles, solo se plantea la siguiente interrogante ¿Es un éxito para la ciencia o solo una manera de demostrar que ser Dios puede ser beneficioso o devastador?; esto es lo que debes descubrir a medida que avanza la trama.
Con respecto a la ambientación y fotografía; para mi funciona como un personaje más, ya que se debe demostrar la frialdad de los espacios, los cuales generan en el espectador ese sentimiento de claustrofobia, miedo y suspenso. Un lugar que si bien es un laboratorio; es un lugar que está alejado de todo y de todos, un aislamiento necesario para que las acciones se puedan dar con total naturalidad. Los efectos que podemos disfrutar, si bien es cierto que son espectaculares para la época, también es cierto que son mejores que algunos efectos de hoy en día. Cada paso de la transformación es única y los detalles se perciben a simple vista.
Ahora, independientemente del terror y misterio que pudiera causar esta película; el mensaje está muy claro, nadie puede ser tan arrogante y pretender cambiar la historia de la humanidad al creerse Dios. Siempre habrá margen de error y jamás se podrá saber, cuántos seres deben sacrificarse para llegar al éxito. Por otra parte; también nos invita a reflexionar sobre los cambios físicos que podemos tener en nuestras vidas y más allá de compararnos con lo que sucede en la película; si podemos hacer comparaciones con respecto a la forma de envejecer, de enfermar y como dije antes, el terror que podemos sentir al tener la posibilidad de perder algún día a quien más amas; saludos y nos vemos pronto.
