Soy duro conmigo mismo.

A coworker's 41st birthday
Not everything you love needs to be changed. — Oneray
I read this Sunday's prompt and spent several days thinking about it before writing. Not because I didn't know how to answer, but because answering seriously means revealing things one usually keeps to oneself—perhaps due to the biology of being a man, or because I tend to avoid showing weakness.
I’m going to name three things, without embellishment.
My time for creating.
I do not compromise on the space I set aside for writing, reading, and thinking. I know that sometimes this looks like isolating myself, stopping socializing, or becoming the odd one out in the group. That may be true. But that time is neither a luxury nor a whim: it is where everything I eventually publish takes shape—everything that will end up becoming a book or an article. If that time were taken away, I would have nothing to offer in my writing or, worse yet, nothing to offer myself.
The time I dedicate to creating the world around me is non-negotiable; it requires time, dedication, and a commitment to consistency.
Reciprocity—or there is no relationship.
With people, I expect the same in return for what I give. Not in a calculating way, but because a friendship that only moves in one direction ceases to be a friendship and turns into something else—something I have no interest in maintaining. If I notice a lack of reciprocity, I don't make a scene—or "make drama," as Chileans say—nor do I launch into long complaints; I simply step away.
For a long time now, I have preferred a small, balanced relationship over a large, unbalanced one. In fact, my circle of friends is so small that I can count them on one hand and still have fingers left over; after all, what is the point of being surrounded by people who contribute nothing to one’s personal growth—people whose lives revolve around frivolity and toxic gossip?
Discipline for those who walk beside me.
I am hard on myself. I rarely dwell on trivial matters, and if I lose sight of a goal, I quickly correct course before straying too far. I expect the same from anyone who chooses to walk alongside me. The path of someone writing a book—someone who has decided to leave mediocrity and complacency behind—demands change. You cannot walk that path half-heartedly. As the saying goes: two cannot walk together unless they are in agreement.
This last point is, in fact, the heart of Nadie vendrá a salvarte (No One Is Coming to Save You), the first book I completed. The underlying idea is this: no one else is going to set your boundaries for you, nor will they uphold your discipline when your resolve wavers. Either you defend them yourself, or no one will.
I don’t know if these three non-negotiables are the “right” ones according to any magazine article, nor can I claim they are the best; however, they are mine. So far, they have helped me find peace with myself, even if explaining them to others can sometimes be difficult. It reminds me of what the Apostle Peter said in the Bible: They think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of immorality, and so they insult you.
Honestly, this is something I experience daily; while others are out “enjoying life,” I am dedicated to my personal growth and to improving in the areas where I still need work.
I may well adopt more non-negotiables in the future, but for now, these are the ones I stand by. ---
