It was a pretty busy day at work, but I still made time to go out for a ride and keep racking up the kilometers. Spring is approaching in all its glory, and that’s really satisfying.
Early in the morning, I started off with the problem that I couldn’t heat water in the electric kettle. Apparently, when the plug doesn’t fit snugly into the outlet, it causes the area to overheat and, of course, melt everything in its path. The house’s circuit breaker tripped, so I went back to the old-fashioned way of heating water with the gas stove. But as the man of the house—and as our mothers say—it’s our responsibility to fix things. Relying on artificial intelligence, I asked, “How can I fix this?” and it gave me step-by-step instructions on what to do. I’ll take care of it tomorrow. Of course, I’m no amateur, and I do have some knowledge of electricity.
When I was getting my gear and bike ready to go out for a ride, I realized that the battery in the heart rate monitor wasn’t working. Don’t ask me why, but it’s something I’ve been dealing with for a while. I think the ones I use are the cheapest ones available, which is why they don’t last very long at all. Maybe it’s also because they’re exposed to a lot of sweat—I should dry them every time I’m done using them, and sometimes I do, but they still wear out very quickly. They aren’t expensive, but they should last a little longer—or maybe I’m doing something wrong.
I always talk about the importance of taking care of yourself when it comes to nutrition, especially when you’re training. Today, as I always joke, I slipped up—as Maradona would say. A cookie with dulce de leche paired with mate really adds practically nothing. Simple carbohydrates that, at best, just get stored in your body without contributing anything. But hey, these things happen, and since I try to be transparent, I’m sharing this too. On my blog, I try to be truly transparent and share exactly how I experience my workouts. Not everything is perfect, and we struggle daily with emotions, fears, and frustrations—which sometimes lead us to make decisions without thinking them through. When we’re in the throes of an emotion, it’s not a good idea to make decisions. Sometimes it’s an uphill battle to maintain a balanced diet, but as long as we can get back on the right track, I think that’s the way to go.
The pack in rural bike riding isn’t usually very big—at least not in the groups I ride with. And when I’m out on the road and come across packs of 20 cyclists, I get really nervous. I enjoy it in a way, but not as much as when I’m riding on dirt. On dirt, I feel like if we fall, I’ll just roll into the grass or tumble in the sand, and that’s as far as it’ll go. But on the road, I’m really afraid of falling and scraping myself all over—not to mention breaking a bone. That’s why riding with the pack gives me such an adrenaline rush, though I won’t deny that I love it at times. Especially when I’m in third or fourth place and don’t have the pressure of so many cyclists in front of me. But I do feel the pressure of maintaining my speed and battling the headwind. Something like that happened today, and that’s why we had a great training session. Almost an hour and a half—a long time—but we did a specific workout in the middle, and that really adds up.
From my blog, I’d like to say hello to everyone who stops by to read my posts and leaves a comment—and to those who don’t, too. Whenever I can, I put on my Hive sweater, which I wear with such pride.
Until next time
