Ben Carson is an inspiration that no one is actually dull.
He was struggling in school, and because of that, other students looked down on him. Even Ben himself began to believe that maybe he was not intelligent enough. But his mother, Sonya Carson, refused to accept that conclusion.
She was not highly educated herself, but she understood something Ben had not yet understood: being behind in school did not mean being incapable.
So she changed the way her children lived.
She limited their television time and pushed them to read. At first, Ben hated it. He would rather do what every other child was doing than sit down with books. But gradually, something changed.
The boy who once struggled in class began to understand what he was reading.
Then his grades started improving.
And this is where the story becomes interesting.
As he grew older, Ben became more confident, but he also had a serious problem with anger. There were moments when his temper could have destroyed everything he was working toward.
One incident nearly changed his entire future.
Ben eventually made it into Yale, and later into medical school, despite coming from a background where success was far from guaranteed. But the movie does not make his journey look easy. He had to study, compete, deal with pressure, and prove himself repeatedly.
Then he entered neurosurgery. This was where the story moved from simply being about a brilliant student to being about a surgeon dealing with situations where one wrong decision could cost someone their life. The most difficult part comes when Ben is faced with separating conjoined twins joined at the back of their heads. Think about that. Two babies. One operation. Almost no room for mistakes. And this is what I liked about the movie. It did not make Ben look like some magical genius who could solve everything without fear. It showed the preparation, the pressure, the uncertainty, and the responsibility that came with the decision. what makes gifted hands powerful is how he got there. I never wanted his wife to loose her first son though
Ben started as the boy who was struggling to keep up. He ended up using his hands to successful perform the first successful separation of co-joinsd twins with both of them alive.
