¿Is there currently a growing feeling of loneliness worldwide? ...it's my MeMe #375

The "loneliness epidemic" is a widespread public health crisis characterized by historically high rates of increasing social isolation and a lack of meaningful human connection. Public health authorities, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, have formally recognized chronic loneliness and social isolation as a dangerous condition with severe physical and mental consequences around the world these days.

Loneliness Epidemic Key Causes:

  • Digital Overload: Excessive screen time and social media use often replace face-to-face bonding with shallow interactions and unhealthy social comparisons.

  • Modern Work Culture: Remote schedules, longer working hours, and frequent career-driven relocations weaken everyday community bonds.

  • Shifting Demographics: More people live alone, delay marriage, and have smaller immediate family sizes than in past decades.

  • Individualism: Highly individualistic modern lifestyles reduce participation in shared civic, religious, and communal spaces.

Health Impacts:

  • Physical Dangers: Chronic isolation carries health risks equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day, raising the risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia, and premature death.

  • Mental Toll: Prolonged disconnection heavily fuels anxiety, clinical depression, cognitive decline, and lower overall life satisfaction.

How to Address It:

  • Prioritize Real-World Contact: Make time for face-to-face conversations, group activities, or volunteering to build dependable bonds.

  • Manage Screen Time: Set healthy boundaries with digital devices and social media platforms to reduce feelings of exclusion.

  • Seek Professional Support: Consult a licensed counselor or mental health provider if isolation triggers persistent despair or anxiety.

I also noticed along my journey that lonelieness has to do much with one thinking of themselves too much. After some muh|shrooms madness, that part of the brain that thinks of "I" just shuts off and one is them able to reflect and become aware of their actions, behaviors etc. meditation does this too. It doesn't remove loneliness, but it helps you figure out what it is that causes it. Then you just have to change some actions, get new habits and thus soon or later, loneliness is managed. Same goes with depression, anxiety, stress, anger etc.

However I'm not saying one should go and try mushrooms, but let muhshrooms try you.

    ;)
