If there’s one thing the existence of plastic surgery teaches us, it’s that it hides behind the guise of improving lives through health, when in reality it often disfigures them—and more specifically, facial surgeries, which, the way I see it, destroy more faces than they enhance 😅😅. The thing is, our faces are everything; out of ignorance, we wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice our lives to be beautiful ✨✨. But on the other hand, evolution has given us the privacy of the mind—where we do indeed have a chimera, a multitude of faces that constantly change to adapt to the spectrum from hate to love that we wish to express ❤️ ❤️. All of this is experienced by the steadfast protagonist of this grotesque story 😱😱
Clayface is a film that I think blends many concepts; some work well, while others fall flat because they aren’t fully developed and get lost in the protagonist’s mud-covered face😅😅, but the film is certainly ambitious narratively speaking—and that’s something I celebrate. It’s a serious, dark film, just like the DC character and, in fact, just as the DC Universe as a whole should be 😌😌.... This is undeniable, and it was well worth the price of my movie ticket, since—as of this post—it’s just hit theaters 😎😎👍🏻
It’s interesting that so many people love the current DC universe—except for Supergirl; nobody can save that one 😜😜—so I hope true fans will go see it in theaters, because I don’t understand how you can support something without going to the movies 🤔🤔 And let’s face it, Gunn’s new DC Universe really needs a financial boost—it’s already had three abysmal flops, including Clayface, which doesn’t have what it takes to serve as a solid foundation for establishing this universe, even though it’s a good horror movie 😅😅
I think it draws inspiration from various films, starting with Matt Reeves’ Batman, The Substance, and aesthetic flashes from Hannibal with that villain played by Gary Oldman. That’s why I’m glad I liked the film’s narrative ambition—it has practically no forced jokes like Marvel does. Many people loved the recent Spider-Man movie, and that shows that audiences are settling for very little 🫤🫤
In the case of ClayFace, I think the film is trying to be a Joker; it strives to mimic the impact created by the movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, and although it doesn’t quite succeed 😅😅, the atmosphere is there to continue exploring these storylines involving DC characters that haven’t been explored on the big screen. DC excels at this darkness—it shouldn’t be ashamed of it and should let it flourish, because its executives at Warner Bros. have been trying to make a slapstick copy of Marvel, but Marvel is already the King of Slapstick 😬😬.... Clayface drowns out all of the above in the body horror of its protagonist, Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harris—whose performance, aesthetic, and despair I absolutely loved 🤩🤩
As a concept, The Substance is much better; I didn’t feel the same sense of disgust I did when watching the Demi Moore movie with Clayface, but I’m sure many in the general audience who are more sensitive will feel it—and they’ll love it, given that it’s Halloween 🎃🎃
A protagonist whose only downside worth mentioning is that he’s often brainless, haha 😂😂, but he commands the screen, evokes emotions, and instinctively dominates his surroundings just like a wild animal the moment he lets loose—and boy, did the protagonist enjoy letting loose, bringing hell with him 😈😈
The way the romance with Caitlyn Corr’s character—played by Naomi Ackie—was set up and developed didn’t quite resonate with me. I think it needed more than just chemistry—maybe more screen time—but I couldn’t connect with or understand that emotional level of the film. It’s there, but personally, I liked other aspects better, like the body horror 🤩🤩
Harshly negative reviews of the film—it shows a colossal lack of effort in developing compelling supporting actors and characters. I would have preferred a thousand times more screen time devoted to the romantic emotional development between the two leads 🤔🤔
And the worst part is that the film’s climax happens off-screen.... we don’t get to see it!!.... 🫠🫠
I honestly don’t understand what happened at the end. The film is bogged down by unimportant supporting characters—and, incidentally, the character who’s supposed to serve as the antagonist to fully bring out the protagonist’s villainy.... We literally don’t see how we got to the resolution of that conflict 😑😑
That’s why I have such a strong aversion to the supporting characters in this film—they’re an emotional dead weight, poorly characterized, acted, and executed, which completely squanders the protagonist’s potential 🫠🫠
Just a note: I'm not usually that critical of special effects in movies because I'm a fan of 1960s cinema with practical effects and so on... but this movie lacks heart and care when it comes to the special effects; the transformation sequences often remind me of Mystique from the X-Men instead of Clayface.... I don’t know what’s going on with DC and special effects—that didn’t happen under Snyder 🤔🤔
It has some negatives that I’ve already mentioned, but I’m definitely focusing on the positives, which far outweigh them 😌😌—since the mere fact that this isn’t Gunn trying to unsuccessfully copy his own Guardians of the Galaxy over and over again 🙄🙄, is in itself a huge success and a win for Clayface 😎😎👍🏻
