There are days that begin with a quiet sense of anticipation, with that fresh mindset of someone preparing to contribute, learn, and devote their energy to a new challenge. We trust a recommendation, cross a threshold believing we’re entering a professional setting, and discover—in a matter of hours—that we’ve stepped into a chaotic caricature of what a dignified work environment should be.

I experienced this recently, in a fleeting encounter that lasted barely as long as it takes for a hope to crash against the most utter disorganization. Sometimes, the warning signs appear so quickly that they’re overwhelming.

The first thing you notice is the structural precariousness: a place where the most basic services are conspicuous by their absence—from a lack of water, with the restroom closed off, to the total absence of internet. A space where comfort seems like a foreign luxury and where the lunch break—that basic right to a moment of human respite—becomes a pipe dream because there simply isn’t enough time, nor is it respected.

Added to that lack of material resources was a frantic and chaotic pace. They throw one task after another at you without giving you a single moment to process the information; there’s no manual, no real orientation, no clear explanation. It’s as if they were demanding immediate reflexes in a situation you’re encountering for the first time. And, of course, when the chaos takes its toll and you make the inevitable mistake caused by the sheer pressure, the response isn’t guidance or empathy, but reproach.

But the cycle of daily mistreatment wouldn’t be complete without its worst ingredient: the arrogance of others. That uncomfortable presence of some haughty coworker, whose harsh treatment is always just beneath the surface, accustomed to speaking ill of others and addressing them from a position of false superiority that only highlights the misery of the work environment. These are toxic dynamics that make you realize that the work environment isn’t broken, it simply never existed in the first place.

However, the most surreal part of the entire day wasn’t the operational chaos or the gratuitous rudeness, but the grand finale. The climax came when the office president himself made an appearance, asked—with utter bewilderment—who I was, and declared, in the coldest possible manner, that there was no budget to pay a salary. The implicit—and almost dismissive—conclusion was obvious: I was to leave.

At first, frustration is inevitable. It hurts to see how time is wasted, how good faith and professional recommendations are toyed with. It hurts to see the lack of seriousness on the part of those who summon you to a place that doesn’t even have its finances in order or the minimum resources to operate.

But at my age, with the years I’ve lived, my perspective shifts at an astonishing speed. What at another point in life we might have experienced as a personal failure or a bitter pill impossible to swallow is now transformed into a swift sense of liberation.

There are places where choosing the wrong destination is, in fact, the best way for life to shake you up just in time. Realizing right away what we’re no longer willing to tolerate is a quiet victory. There’s no water, no internet, no budget, no respect, no empathy… but, above all, there’s no time to waste in places that don’t measure up to what we have to offer.

Sometimes, getting kicked out of a terrible place is the universe doing you a huge favor.
