This week's prompt brought to the table by @syllem is an idea that repeats itself like a dogma of faith in modern self-help: to move forward and be happy, you supposedly have to forgive and heal absolutely everything. They sell unconditional forgiveness to us as a mandatory master key. But real life is quite a bit more complex than a pretty phrase on social media.
From my point of view, even though they keep telling us that forgiving is a synonym for mental health, the truth is that there are situations, betrayals, moments, and things that simply cannot be overlooked. Not everything fits into the mold of quick forgiveness.
Personally, when I face a deep offense, the first thing I do is turn to my control tower, which is God, asking Him for the clarity I need to keep moving forward. I keep very present that old saying my mom used to repeat: holding a grudge is the same as drinking poison and waiting for the other person to be the one who dies.
That is a great truth. While one stays trapped in resentment, carrying the anger and refusing to forgive, the other person goes on with their life as happy as can be, completely unaware of what you are living through or suffering. Resentment weighs heavy, but it only weighs heavy on the one who holds it.

Now then, I also believe that we all make mistakes in this life. Just as I have been hurt at some point, it is very possible that I have also caused pain to someone without meaning to, without intending to, and without realizing that I did it.
In those circumstances, the other person simply walks away in silence and you are left wondering what happened, because the offense did not stem from a conscious bad intention. And instead of seeking a solution or an understanding, many times we choose to step aside.
When someone has truly hurt me, at first my mind processes the blow through empathy. I ask myself why, I try to figure out what could have led that person to hurt me in that way, and I genuinely try to put myself in their shoes. However, if after that effort I fail to understand, if I don't see a reasonable motive and all I find is a wall of silence or an indifferent attitude, I make a practical decision: I step aside. Time will take care of putting everything in its place and proving whoever is right, without the need to wear myself out demanding explanations that will never arrive.
A clear example of this is something I live in my own family. I have an older sister who is fourteen years older than me, and she has always been a very grumpy, extremely critical, and cruel person in how she treats me. What is most bothersome about that dynamic is that she has always tried to justify her rude behavior under the alibi that she "has no filter" and that "she is just like that." But that excuse is not valid; you cannot go through life offending, hurting, and running over others while hiding behind a supposed authenticity that is actually pure rudeness and discourtesy.

For many years that situation hurt me deeply. I tried my hardest, attempting to do everything to please her, seeking her approval, wanting her to be happy and to feel proud of me at some point. But that exhaustion has a limit. Little me little, I was burning out inside. Nowadays, the reality is very different: I am consciously distanced from her for the sake of my own mental peace. I only see her when it is strictly necessary, at birthdays or very specific occasions, but I avoid her at all costs.
She even keeps the habit of writing to me every now and then with everyday messages asking why I'm lost, when we'll see each other, or if I want to go watch a movie with her. The interesting thing about this process is that I no longer feel guilty. I no longer torment myself or feel bad when I answer with complete tranquility: "No thanks, I don't feel like it today."
That is the point I wanted to get to. It's not about living with hatred in your chest, but about understanding that mental peace is not negotiable. If a relationship subtracts instead of adding, choosing distance is not an act of arrogance, but of emotional survival. We don't need to forcefully clean up the past or force ourselves to forgive what broke us in order to smile today. Sometimes, the most mature way to heal is simply learning to set firm limits, letting go of the control over what we cannot change, and choosing to inhabit our lives in absolute tranquility.
