The Christian faith is deeply rooted in the people of Sucre, which is why one of its symbols is often found in many places; one such example is the popular Cross of Caigüire. The initiative to build this rustic open-air chapel gradually gained support, evolving from a plot of land with a large cross embedded in it to a public square with concrete benches for holding small ceremonies.
The Caigüire Cross represents another way of living out one’s beliefs; it is an open-air religious site with a spectacular view of the Gulf of Cariaco and the opposite shore of Sucre. The area features gardens with button mangroves that bring the place to life. Fishermen and parishioners in general care for this place with great devotion, with the faith and firm belief that prayers can be answered outside of conventional churches.
Personally, I was there for quite a while, and many thoughts came to mind; the peace that comes from sitting in silence and contemplating the marine environment is a privilege I usually take advantage of whenever I have the chance. The morning was cool, there was a fair breeze, and the sun was hiding behind the clouds, so I was inspired to meditate on life and the meaning of our time on this plane of existence.
Once I finished my relaxation exercise, I noticed that there were fishermen on the shore—men of the sea who spend most of their time on a boat; I’d say they spend more years at sea than in their respective homes. They chose this way of life, and in this way they are happy, thanking God for every productive day and for returning safely from their nighttime voyages.
Just as I was reflecting on this, a boat came into view in the distance, approaching the shore, with several fishermen joyfully waving to their companions on land—a sign of satisfaction with the work they’d done, a scene I could see behind the modest wooden cross.

En lo personal estuve allí un buen rato y muchas reflexiones vinieron a mi mente, la paz que concede permanecer en silencio contemplando la naturaleza marina es un privilegio que suelo aprovechar cada vez que tengo la ocasión. La mañana estaba fresca, soplaba bastante brisa y el sol se escondía tras las nubes, así que me inspiré para meditar sobre la vida y la trascendencia en el lapso de tiempo que permanecemos en este plano existencial.
Una vez que finalicé mi ejercicio de relajación, observé que en la orilla habían pescadores, hombres de mar que pasan la mayor parte de su tiempo sobre un bote, diría que permanecen más años en el mar que en sus respectivos hogares.
