Exploring the Banks of the Manzanares River (Eng/Esp)

I continue my walk through Guaquerí Park, heading toward the banks of the Manzanares River. This stretch is located between the Guzmán Blanco and Gómez Rubio bridges and is usually a very pleasant walk thanks to the natural scenery that can be seen along the entire route. Although Cumaná is experiencing a water crisis, the rains and the river’s own water have helped refresh the trees and plants here, which is why you can see a mix of dry earth alongside certain green areas.

During my walk, I noticed that the municipality is still carrying out cleanup and dredging work on the Manzanares River—a task that has taken several months. It’s not easy to maintain the park’s greenery without a water supply, but you can see the effort the staff is putting in to keep the most delicate flora and fauna in this public space alive.

You can usually spot a variety of birds, sloths, squirrels, dogs, cats, and iguanas, among other animals. Just today I was able to take a picture of an iguana; on other occasions, my attempts were unsuccessful because these reptiles move very quickly and can dart from the ground to a tree in an instant, until their camouflage allows them to blend into the branches.

But this “show-off” iguana was posing very calmly, revealing its dark coloring—a sign that it’s getting on in years and trusts in its abilities, as well as in the fact that I won’t harm it. We looked at each other, as if we both agreed that it’s incredibly hot in the city. Then I continued on my way through the shade provided by the enormous trees lining the banks of the Manzanares River.

Prosigo mi recorrido por el Parque Guaquerí, rumbo a las Riberas del Río Manzanares, este tramo se ubica entre los puentes Guzmán Blanco y Gómez Rubio y suele ser un trayecto muy agradable por el despliegue natural que se aprecia durante todo el camino. Si bien Cumaná experimenta una crisis hídrica, las lluvias y la propia agua del río han servido para refrescar los árboles y plantas de este lugar, por ello se aprecia una combinación de tierra seca junto a ciertas áreas verdes.

En mi caminar aprecié que todavía la municipalidad está realizando labores de limpieza y dragado del Manzanares, tarea en la cual se han invertido varios meses. No está fácil mantener el verdor del parque sin suministro de agua, pero se aprecia el esfuerzo del personal tratando de mantener con vida la flora y la fauna más delicada de este espacio público.

Por lo regular se aprecia una diversidad de pájaros, osos perezosos, ardillas, perros, gatos e iguanas, entre otros especímenes. Justamente hoy pude tomar una fotografía a una iguana, en otras ocasiones tal labor resultó infructuosa porque estos reptiles se mueven muy rápido y en instantes pasan del suelo a un árbol hasta que su camuflaje logra que se pierdan entre las ramas.

Pero está iguana "farandulera" posaba de lo más tranquila, dejaba ver sus tonos oscuros, lo que significa que tiene sus años encima y confía en sus habilidades y en que no le haré daño. Nos miramos mutuamente, como si coincidiéramos en que hace un calor en la ciudad muy intenso. Luego seguí mi camino por la sombra que ofrecen los enormes árboles que se encuentran en la ribera del Manzanares.
