The Sucre Sisters' Room (Eng/Esp)

English version

The first room I visited at the Antonio José de Sucre House Museum was the one set aside for his sisters. Perhaps the most striking feature of this room is the bed; the mattress was dark blue. The guide made it clear that, at that time, color did not denote gender; the tradition that still holds today—blue for boys and pink for girls—was imposed by society years later.

Among all the furnishings, one toy stands out on the bed: a porcelain doll that resembles the one from the movie Annabelle, which is why it’s considered a creepy object. There are two more on the dressing table, and they give off the same impression. The most curious thing about this is that it’s a collective feeling; the guide told me that other visitors have made the same comment and that the night watchman doesn’t enter this room because he feels a mysterious and terrifying atmosphere hangs over it.

The room looks elegant, with everything needed to rest and enjoy oneself. The decor is understated, avoiding an overcrowded look. Keep in mind that there are other areas in the house designated for other activities, such as the game and recreation room; therefore, this space was used exclusively for sleeping and grooming after a bath. It is worth noting that the lighting does not correspond to the period; electric lamps illuminate the room, replacing the wax candles and kerosene lamps that were used in colonial times to provide light at night.

Another aspect worth highlighting is the view: the large windows, in addition to allowing air to circulate, provided a privileged vantage point for observing the surroundings in greater detail. In colonial-era Cumaná, the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia was the landmark of the area, with the Basilica of Santa Inés in the background.

Those dolls would definitely make me feel a little uneasy too especially after hearing the stories from the guide and the night watchman. 😊
