Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

OBJECTIVE

Sam's Hangout is focused on promoting the togetherness of the Nigerian brethren through active engagement on the blockchain. Beyond that, it is also centered towards the wellbeing of everyone who takes part in our weekend discussions and helps keep our discord running with their presence.

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "CAREER CHOICE: PASSION OR JOB SECURITY?”.
Choosing a course of study is one of the first major decisions many young people make regarding their future. While some are encouraged to follow and build on their true interests and natural strengths, others are advised to choose professional courses with straightforward career paths and better job prospects. However, the realities of working an unfulfilling job and the risk unemployment has led to many asking what really should be prioritized.

Here's the question!

Do you think young people should prioritize professional courses with better job security over courses they are genuinely passionate about? If yes, how do you suggest they reconcile themselves with a career they don't love? Do you believe this choice can still lead to long-term fulfilment for them as time goes on?

Should parents encourage their children to pursue the courses and careers they genuinely love, even when those paths may offer fewer job opportunities or financial security? Answer. For me No. Passion come first. What everyone seek at the end of the day is happiness and peace, and it doesn't matter where it comes from. Job security is good, but not better than a job one does out of love.

If everyone continue to chase jobs that offer security, then the professional is doomed, because no one would give their best to it, we'll only have employees who are hungry for gain and not for the service.

People might believe money may be the reconciling factor, but at the long run it only brings greed and unfulfillment because at the end, what people would truly seek is peace and joy, not the money

In my opinion, parents should explain everything about the labour market to their kids, but also let them pursue their passion. If a parent should pressure the kids into their career choice, sometimes it doesn't end well for the child because there's tendency of being a drop out if the child can't cope.

Job security means staying on the job for a reasonable length of time without issues as an employee or from the company. Such issues could result from the company's inability to fulfil or sustain its financial obligations, leading to the employees' redundancy or the company's shutdown.

On the other hand, Passion is having a strong feeling towards something one is convinced of and genuinely pursuing it by investing time and energy. Now, coming to the theme of the message,
CAREER CHOICE: PASSION OR JOB SECURITY?
Career choice in real life ought to be about passion; however, the saying that when the desired is not available, the available becomes desired is what plays out most often. However, in the beginning, the right foundation is supposed to be driven into our children,

First is granting them exposure to courses that have better career advancement, growth, and job security. Recently, children are groomed in coding and UI/UX courses to prepare them for the job market. When this is well executed, they start building passion around the things they are exposed to, acquiring professional certificates that will seamlessly launch them into the job market. At that point, job security wouldn’t be an issue as they are already equipped with options. I have a friend who does not stay beyond 3 years in a company; the individual is well equipped that once he decides to move, it happens within a month.

However, if a child grew up with an already made choice and passion for a particular course, It would be good to educate the child about the realities in the job market but not to force them outside their passion, as it can lead to dropout, bad performance, low grades, and even depression. After graduation, the individual can still switch careers by obtaining professional certifications and further studies in the area of new interest.

Doing that will reposition the individual in the job market and pave the way for better options. In conclusion, what matters is flexibility and creativity to navigate career terrains. There is no one cap fits it all situation. Thank you.

Happy weekend my feofle

Recent state of employment had proven that school shouldn't just be about gaining admission and studying some random courses but about job security and knowing the kind of career to build. But all these have to come in for children as a guide and not as an order of what career they must do. This is often the reason why most children end up feeling like they live for their parents.

If at all, the child insist on the career path you feel as a parent that it's not going to bring much opportunities like that, then as a parent, were left to give them support and work on how theirs may be different from the rest in that field. As time goes on, they might find their path walking through the path you once wish they thread in or even become successful in the one they chose

In my opinion, I feel it should not be an either or choice. What parents can do is help their kids by explaining what the reality of the labour market looks like today and those children's interests. By so doing, those children will likely be able to choose a path for themselves where their passion will now be developed into a useful skill. And with what I have seen, I don't think a career will fewer opportunities can be regarded as a bad choice if the person is willing to build expertise. In fact no career is a bad choice just that no job provisions and opportunities for those types of careers in this country. Some people have created opportunities and adapted to any career they followed. But at the same time and some of us already know that passion alone can foot the bile. So I'll say it very important to always tell them to find what they are good at, what they can do well at, what they also enjoy because that is what the market is searching for today.

I believe parents should encourage and allow their kids to chase/pursue career paths that they genuinely love and have a passion for studying, but while supporting their choices, I will also help them understand the realities of those choices they choose to pursue.

If it's a career choice that doesn't have a competitive advantage, they will chase it as a hobby and not as a primary career. That's because passion doesn't guarantee financial success. Apart from chasing what they are passionate about, they should also consider the future.

No doubt chasing passion is great. I have seen passion creates opportunities, especially when it's combined with constant dedication, creativity and constant learning and I have also seen it ruin people.

For instance, I used to have this girl in my neighborhood who said she just wanted to learn ballet dance and didn't want to do any other thing. She went as far as attending the lessons. Everyone knew her for that passion, and now we are grown up, she's currently realizing that Nigeria isn't a country that places much value on ballet dance. That was just a passion, and she turned it into a career. In the real sense, she would have chased a lucrative career and considered ballet dancing as a hobby, because she even needed money to relocate to a better country, to expertise and get opportunities to explore her talents. Most of the career choices kids make are just hobbies they get from what they watch or see. It's the duty of the parents to help them understand that there's a difference between a hobby and a career.

Parents should also try to make kids understand that there are certain skills that are valuable in the job market and if their passion doesn't have any value, they have to consider it a hobby, or side hustle and chase what is valuable in the job market and be open to evolving their career. As parents, you just have to open their eyes to reality and prevent them from making mistakes. If their passion doesn't have an advantage, I'm the kind of parent that will convince them to consider that passion a hobby and focus on a career that has a competitive advantage in our society.

To not beat around the bush, first off, I think people should consider job security, not as if it should be at the expense of what they actually love. Nah, because spending years doing something you don't love or have passion for can be draining too. I think I can call my myself an ex Corper member already, just few weeks to go and I'm done. One of the things I've learned via some of the professional courses I took was that, you can find a balance. In the sense that, if you find a secure job that you dislike, take it up, find some part of it that you enjoy, and build a skill or something around it. Also, since the job is secure, you can still keep your passion alive outside of it. And about fulfillment, I can't guarantee that, but it may come depending on how you handle it. Since you can pursue your passion outside work or can find something or a particular field you enjoy and build something around it.

For parents, I would say they should allow and support their children pursue what they really love. Even if it does not look secure, they should understand that so far it is what the child has interest in, then he/she would definitely come out different. I mean, not every successful person we see today tread a safe path, some followed the path others criticized and are doing very well today. Also, not as if parents should just support them blindly, nah, they should support, advice and encourage while also making sure to make the child understand the risks involved. The child on his/her part too should know the possible risks, how to navigate through and as well learn skills that would make him/her standout in that career path he/she has chosen.
