Sam’s Hangout #126 - “SIMPLY LIVING OR PERFORMING?"

"The influence of social media is unbelievable. It's sad to see—it's a fake life that some people live." — Virgil van Dijk.

Hello, my lovely Hive Naija people. It’s another beautiful weekend, and we’re excited to have you here once again. A new weekend simply means another chance to buzz the Hive blockchain, connect with one another, and simply have fun. You'll also agree with me that there’s something special about bringing everyone together to gist, share opinions, and enjoy good vibes. That is exactly the reason we will continue to meet every weekend.

SIMPLY LIVING OR PERFORMING?

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "SIMPLY LIVING OR PERFORMING?”.
Social media has made it easier for us to present a perfectly curated version of our lives. We see the perfect-looking relationships online, successful careers, expensive lifestyles, constant happiness, and seemingly effortless achievements. But how much of these can we point to be real? While presenting our best selves is not necessarily dishonest, constantly creating an image that does not reflect reality can blur the line between living well and pretending to live well.

Here's the question!

Do you think people are becoming too invested in creating the notion of a perfect life due to what they see on social media, even when their reality is completely different? Asides social media, what else do you think drives people to maintain an image they cannot genuinely sustain?

OR

Have you ever felt pressured to make your life look better than it actually was because of what people around you were achieving or displaying? If yes, please share how you navigated that season and what lessons you learned from it.

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

I think most times we're carried away with the illusion of perfection. We see others who seem to have the perfect life and we tend to forget that a lot of sacrifices were made behind the scenes or things are not actually perfect.

People will always prefer to display the aesthetically pleasing aspects of their life, but we shouldn't let it pressure us because we don't really know what's going on behind the scenes.

Great initiative and such challenges are what revive the engagement on the Hive blockchain even during bearish times. Keep on going!

Answer. Yes. Social media has influenced a lot of youth negatively, especially in pretending to be someone they are not. Everyone wants to be accepted and have that sense of belonging and they do this at all cost.

People on social media seems to applaud those who are doing or acting to be living a perfect life, so most youth try to fall into that category. However, aside social media peer pressure plays a role in making young people choose pretence over the truth. They believe only those who are living perfectly are accepted.

Huhhh... It's really been a while here, but I'm glad I'm here now. To answer the second question, YES!! I've been pressured and is still being pressured by people around me. Funny how I was discussing this same thing with a friend yesterday. I've had times iny life where the only thing that gave me sleepless night was how to make my life better simply because I think people around me are doing way better than I am. Mind you... I'm doing my best too but that best still felt like it wasn't enough, I had this burden to do more (did I just say "had"? Lol). This is good and bad at the same time. Bad in the sense that I sometimes loose focus from what really matters and try to become those people. But rn in my life I've grown to a point that even while being pressured I try to make the most out of "ME" and not another's.

Feeling pressured makes me have wider dreams, to become more. Don't get me wrong, my dreams aren't inspired by pressure oo😂🤲 But it has made me think of becoming more, should I say these good part of it is more like being inspired and not pressured.

I navigate these moments by reminding myself that I'm doing my best, looking back and realising how far I've come kinda makes me feel less pressured. I just LIVE while still becoming the woman I've always dreamt of Do I love pressure?? YES!! I do, do I want to be pressured?? YES too. But please as I'll always say " no gree make person pressure you" this is about those online shenanigans we see everyday, you know what I mean. If at all you want to be pressured may it be the one I define as "inspiration" SHALOM❤️✨

    HAPPY WEEKEND FAM

It's actually something people take to heart now most especially those who are always addicted to people or their success life on social media and until they get drowned imitating such person, they are not seeing anything bad about it. Social media may be the medium but it's never the problem.

Like I would always say that the ⌚ is enough reason for everyone to reason that you can't run your life or be pressurized by someone else's success cos their own seconds no be your own seconds. My time is not your time and probably that's the main reason I'm not always bothered about who and who have left me behind in something. I'll achieve mine at my pace either its little or huge, slow of fast.

  • @treasuree(75)· 3d

    Hello everyone happy weekend.

In this life I don't think anyone or anything has ever pressured me , because to be honest , before I will feel anything like presuree , I always talk to myself to see where I am coming from and not be awkward with myself about something that's not in my control. So no nothing like pressure here. @henryjnrr @afrikens Sup?

    Hello everyone 👋

I think it's my first join the weekend hangout 😸

Social media shows us the most perfect life which we only can dream of, when i opened especially the picture on Instagram or on pintrest they're so fine that without flaw's because people chose them to shows us. Not that real thing's as they've filter.

We're focusing us to chasing goals about things which we saw on the social media but one thing i think that technology also put pressure on us.

Because when we see different facilities and we want to give them to our family for the goodness and to get them obviously hard as everything needs money and so we're all chasing thing and make a aim to get that.

But, i know that life isn't so perfect like what it shows to us on social media also not everything is for ourselves so just try to get balanced in this society and you'll have your peace ✌️

    Happy weekend 😊

Happy weekend, everyone. These questions are really timely. For one, I believe that social media has created that avenue for people to mask who they truly are and what they do for a living. On most platforms, people can bear different names and simply act like they've got it all together. They go on vacations, wear nice clothes and take photos in the nicest spots. Sometimes, they are not really a reflection of their realities. Their luck and access to these things may be proximity to those who actually have their life together.

Behind closed doors, these people do not always eat expensive meals or pay for their outfits in one installment. Some even borrow accessories just to look good. Poor parenting, lack of contentment and low self-esteem are other factors that contributes to this. But I'm hoping that in the coming years, people will live a more realistic life, both online and offline. Why? Because there is no shame in being who you are!

    @cagolistic the hangout is live.🤗

  • A lot came to my mind reading this topic, but I feel social media has now made it much more earlier for some , lemme even say a lot of people to perform perfect life but that is not the only reason. Most people if not all always carry this feeling and are always extremely careful of how people see them. They fea been judged, some are insecure, some are after thier status, some family expectations and even the pressure to feel and look successful will make some do beyond their power in a way that they cannot afford financially and even emotionally. Though there's real life pressure too, but I just feel the real issue here isn't presenting our best selves, I think the real issue is when people protect the image that is being shown online much more than fixing their real image behind it. Because real eyes realize real lies

    My 2 cent

  • @marsdave(73)· 4d

    I.

You know, the media has made a lot of things easy. And one of those things is making it easier to show fake, beautiful, and luxurious things. I mean, someone can be struggling financially in reality but online such person maybe dressing and posting expensive things. I'd tell people, the media people only let you see what they want you to see, or what they know you want to see. You see unhappy people in relationships acting all lovey dovey online and you began to compare and have an idea of such a perfect life that didn't exist anywhere. Though the media is playing a great role in it, we can't undermine the role the family, friends and all play in it too. Family expectation on it's own is enough, not to talk of peer pressure and the likes too.

Life is not perfect, there's no perfect life, relationship and all anywhere. The earlier you accept that, the better. It is way better to live a genuine life than living a scripted one for people.

II Well, I've felt that before. I wouldn't want to generalize it even though I know a lot of us would have felt that way before too. You know, when you look all around you and you see everyone making progress except you. And even though you're genuinely happy for them and the progress they are making in life, it's still normal for you to look at yours and wonder if you're making any progress at all.

There was a time I actually wanted to do that though, you know, I don't want my mate and all to think I'm still behind in life. But I'm glad I quickly called myself back to attention. I realized living that kind of life is even more expensive 😃. Spending huge amount of money to maintain an Image that I'm not 😏 So, I just live my own life, appreciate my small wins, work towards being a better human and understand that our times are different. You're here today doesn't mean I can't be ahead of you tomorrow. This is life ✌️ so I keep pushing. No need to prove anything to anyone or living to impress anyone 💯

Thank you for your attention to this matter 🫡

Happy weekend dear friends and great hivers.

The truth is , peer pressure is real. And one thing i do really thank God about myself is that, i am one person that is not easily influenced by peer pressure. I admire and welcome good thing, even if i can't get it at that point, I work towards getting it at the right time.

But trying to fake the life that i can't afford online just to oppresse people is what i can't do. I see people doing that on daily basis amd at times that action alone scare away those who were even supposed to be of help to you. And might even bring you more problem.

So in summary, i don't subscribe to fake life. Some people will say "fake it , untill you make it . " For me is , appreciate good things and work towards also getting it. Don't allow what you see on sicia media pressurise you. Because people are just there to show , that's why i funly call it "show show midia " 😂
