The cat loves to play with the pots and I had to put tiny boundary to protect
We are already in the middle of October, and time is flying by so fast. Dussehra (Vijayadashami) is coming up in just one week, and we are bound to be occupied with a lot of festive preparations. However, nature waits for no one, and garden work cannot be delayed if we want to catch the upcoming winter season. Interestingly, the true winter chill now starts late in November or early December. Ideally, we should have a full winter setting in by early December, but these seasonal patterns have shifted noticeably over recent years. Earlier, winter used to arrive reliably by late October, but these days we can easily blame the delays on global warming or the El Niño effect. As I mentioned in my last post, I initially planned to start working on the soil only after returning from my native place. But looking at how fast the time is progressing, I realized it was much wiser to begin the preparation right there at my native home since winter is just around the corner.
Determined to get things right, I took matters into my own hands and prepared all the pots myself over a couple of days, after making sure to sun-cure the pots and soil under direct sunlight for three to four days first. I did hire a helper to assist with some heavy clearance work in our backyard and to help out around the garden. However, watching his careless approach quickly made up my mind; I decided I would never hire him again because he completely lacked that sense of perfection and dedication a true garden requires. Once the pots were thoroughly ready, I reached out to my best friend for help. Since he commutes daily past a well-known nursery I trust, I asked him to pick up some fresh winter saplings for me. He does not know much about plants, so I had to guide him step-by-step over the phone to make sure we got the right ones. He ended up bringing back some incredibly cute, delicate saplings. Knowing they needed to go into the ground immediately after their journey, I couldn't afford to wait for the next morning. Even though it was already almost 8:00 PM, I set to work under the evening sky, carefully planting them and giving them their crucial first "birth water."
The very next morning, however, a little surprise was waiting for me in the garden. Soil was spilled all over from one of the freshly settled pots, and our mischievous kitten was happily playing around right in the middle of my hard work. Maybe he was a good gardener in his past life 😀!! This cute little cat is the newest addition to our family - he is the son of Mini, a stray cat who essentially forced her way into our lives and permanently claimed our household as her own home. I will write a completely separate post to share that fun.
To protect the delicate new plants, I had to come up with an innovative, immediate solution to create a tiny protective boundary until these saplings grow big and sturdy enough to defend themselves. I went out to the backyard, gathered some bamboo sticks we had cut the previous day, and chopped them down into small, uniform pieces. I then drove them into the soil to form a neat, mini-fence structure around each pot, successfully keeping the curious kitten at bay.
With the native garden securely set up, I have handed over the daily care and watering duties to Mom. And October is a month of surprise, we can get more rain or even cyclones, so that is the reason, I have placed these pots under the roof. But the journey doesn't stop there; I also brought a few select saplings back with me to plant here at my place. I have purposely readied two specific pots in advance to port these saplings, giving myself enough time to organize the rest of the setup here without rushing, stay tuned for more updates.
