The Ultimate Act of Friendship

After a 12-Year Silence.....Relationships matters a lot - at least for we gen X

In 2012, I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. I packed up our lives and moved away from Bangalore. My young son was facing serious health issues, and medical advice dictated a change in environment. In the chaotic haze of moving, caregiving, and watching time fly, I slowly lost touch with many incredible people. Among them was my long-time colleague from ACI Worldwide, Prasad M.

Fourteen years passed. The sick little boy I worried over grew up, fought his battles, and recently got admission into IIMK Kochi. As the initial wave of pride settled, reality hit me. My son was moving far away from home and we don’t have relatives staying there to take care in case of any necessity. I needed to find someone, and then the very first name that flashed in my mind was Prasad M. I didn’t even have his phone number anymore. In a purely Gen X move, I hunted him down here on LinkedIn, sending a message into the void, hoping he would remember me. What happened next is something I think Gen Z might struggle to fully grasp.

We didn’t just exchange polite emojis or share location pins. Prasad, who had since settled in Kochi, didn’t just say "let's grab coffee sometime." Instead, he completely showed up. He stepped in and lifted the heavy weight of anxiety right off a worried parent's shoulders. He spent hours with us, guiding the kid about the culture of the city, what to do and what not to do, what to be cautious about and effectively taking full responsibility for my son’s well-being in this new chapter, giving him a lifetime pass: "Reach out to me anytime, for absolutely anything." As parents, we spend our lives protecting our children. Sending them off into the world is terrifying. But I flew back home with a lighter heart and a profound sense of relief.

Thank you, Prasad. You reminded me that true friendship doesn't care about time, distance, or a decade of silence. It just shows up when it matters most. And the audio clip that you sent me about kid is his first Humanity Trophy and the best real achievement till date – he will realize the reason more, as he gets older.

I have made a video clip of your audio so that it can be embedded, shared and preserved forever.

What a special and real connection!

Having spent a couple decades in the corporate world, I often think back to all the colleagues who became friends. Our lives have taken us different places but I can still feel those dormant connections. I would like to think they could be flicked on again if the need arises and look forward to when I have time to revisit those relationships.

With all the technology and the self-centered mindset these days, these are the examples that all we really have is our health and the connections to the universe we have built over the years.

    Nice story!

That's awesome you were able to reconnect like that. I worry that if I lost touch with some of my friends they would just forget all about me!

That is great friendship. One that lasts the test of time and space. Good luck to your son and you with this new adventure he is on.
