Hace unas semanas atrás me inscribí a un curso gratuito de lettering, fue un curso super rápido de un solo día y aunque fue gratuito siento que aprendí bastante, sobre todo aprendí sobre los distintos tipos de marcadores que se pueden usar, lastimosamente no he podido comprar marcadores, pero ese curso me inspiró a practicar así que como siempre lo hice con los materiales que tengo a la mano que son los lápices de colores un bolígrafo liner y un marcador Sharpie. 🥰
A few weeks ago, I signed up for a free lettering class. It was a super quick, one-day class, and even though it was free, I feel like I learned a lot—especially about the different types of markers you can use. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to buy any markers yet, but that course inspired me to practice, so as always, I used whatever materials I had on hand: colored pencils, a liner pen, and a Sharpie marker. 🥰
No sé mucho sobre el arte de dibujar letras, así que para practicar busque una imagen de referencia con la frase "Feliz cumpleaños" que me gusto mucho, porque el tipo de letras me pareció interesante, pero le cambié los colores a las letras, porque lo iba a usar para decorar el envoltorio del regalo para un primito y los colores que elegí justo iban con la temática de su regalo, en fin fue una práctica muy bonita, pero de antemano debo admitir que estoy deseosa de poder comprar marcadores, definitivamente la técnica de lápices de colores no es mi preferida. 🤭 Pero ya sin más charla los dejo con el paso a paso de mi práctica de Lettering. 🥰
I don’t know much about the art of lettering, so to practice I looked for a reference image with the phrase “Happy Birthday” that I really liked—I thought the font was interesting—but I changed the colors of the letters because I was going to use it to decorate the gift wrap for a little cousin, and the colors I chose matched the theme of his gift perfectly. Anyway, it was a really fun exercise, but I have to admit up front that I can’t wait to buy some markers—the colored pencil technique definitely isn’t my favorite. 🤭 But without further ado, here’s the step-by-step guide to my lettering practice. 🥰

Cómo esta práctica tenía el doble propósito de ser usada para decorar el envoltorio de un regalo, me pareció lindo imitar el fondo de puntitos de tiene la imagen, así que decidí usar una hoja de puntitos, de hecho ese fue uno de los detalles que más me gustó de la imagen así que ame tener como poder recrearlo, lo único que necesite fue recortar la parte de los horificios que trae y la hoja y quedó lista para dibujar las letras.
Since this project served the dual purpose of decorating a gift wrapper, I thought it would be nice to imitate the polka-dot background in the image, so I decided to use a sheet of polka-dot paper. In fact, that was one of the details I liked most about the image, so I loved being able to recreate it. All I needed to do was cut out the part with the holes and the sheet, and it was ready for me to draw the letters.
Comencé a dibujar las letras con lápiz ya que use la técnica de lettering falso, hace mucho tiempo que no dibuja letras, normalmente cuando nececito sacar moldes de letras para hacer Topper con foami, lo que hago es calcar porque la verdad siento que así termino más rápido, pero como está vez se trataba de prácticar lettering calcar no era lo más conveniente.
I started drawing the letters in pencil since I was using the faux lettering technique. It’s been a long time since I’ve drawn letters; usually, when I need to make letter stencils to create foam toppers, I trace them because, honestly, I feel like I finish faster that way. But since this time I was practicing lettering, tracing wasn’t the best approach.
Luego comencé a colorear las letras y es aquí donde sufrí bastante porque quería que quedara azul y rojo bastante intenso y para eso tuve ejercer bastante presión con el lápiz de color y eso me hace doler el cuello el hombro y obviamente la muñeca, por eso digo que estoy ansiosa por comprar marcadores para practicar más a gusto. Pero lo importante es que se logró. 🙌🏻🥰
Then I started coloring in the letters, and that’s where I really struggled because I wanted the blue and red to be really intense, so I had to press down pretty hard with the colored pencil—which made my neck, shoulder, and, of course, my wrist hurt. That’s why I’m eager to buy markers so I can practice more comfortably. But the important thing is that I pulled it off. 🙌🏻🥰
Para la palabra "Cumple" utilicé un marcador punta fina Sharpei y para el contorno de las demás palabras use un bolígrafo tipo liner también añadi algunos detalles de decoración con lápices de colores y ese fue el resultado, para mí fue una práctica súper rápida, productiva y útil, pero de verdad espero tener marcadores pronto. 🥰
For the word "Cumple," I used a Sharpei fine-tip marker, and for the outlines of the other words, I used a liner-style pen. I also added some decorative details with colored pencils, and that was the result. For me, it was a super quick, productive, and useful exercise, but I really hope to get some markers soon. 🥰
