Hello, there! **@saydie** here, playing **Splinterlands** everyday!
After looking into the list of game modifiers that have been removed from the ruleset circulation in battles, I found out that there are at least 10 modifiers that I no longer see not only within my battles, but even in other players' matches. I highly doubt that it was just all coincidence, given that I have been looking for the rulesets for quite a few days. And as I said, I find a way to verify whether a modifier is still in use or not by looking at them in Custom Challenges. Because when making a Custom Challenge, you can choose which rulesets will be active in the battle.
And after searching for Deflection Field, it did not show up as a ruleset option, which led me to conclude that it was no longer part of the ruleset circulation.
Deflection Field
Including the recently added game modifier, Splinterlands now has a total of 82 Game Modifiers. This is if we include all the seasonal rulesets as well as all the inactive ones. As you all know, game modifiers are a vital part of the game, as it changes the conditions that could affect the result of every battle. Depending on which rulesets are at play can dramatically influence what cards players will use, as they have to adapt their tactics on the fly so that they can win the battle. So, it is not an exaggeration to say that the Game Modifiers can sometimes pose more of a threat than your opponent.
And along my search for these rulesets, I found out that not a single time did I have a battle where Deflection Field ruleset was available, whether it was on Modern, Survival, Brawls, or even on Tournaments.
Deflection Field
All units have the Deflect ability.
*Deflect reduces damage from Blast splash damage and Punishment abilities—Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns to 0.
The Deflect ability was first introduced during Chaos Legion, particularly with the Water epic unit Tide Biter and the Neutral legendary unit, Venator Kinjo. These two cards have become a very important part of the meta back then because it contains the Blast Splash damage from damaging other units, and have become a means to counter the Fire Archon Yodin Zaku that gives the Blast ability to ally units. At the same time, units with Deflect ability were also immune to Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns.
But as time goes on, more and more cards with Deflect ability have been added to the game, including Archons that could grant the ability to units. That alone has heavily nerfed those abilities. Then, on top of that, there were even cards with Deflection Shroud that would give Deflect to adjacent units. So, if there was also a ruleset that negated those abilities, then those cards would have even less of a use case and would throw off game balance. So I can understand why the team would remove this ruleset from circulation.
The only way that you could go around and nullify the effects of Deflect was through the Expose ability, but I think that ability is also quite broken, so as much as possible, they should only be given to a small number of cards.
Closing
So, between removing this ruleset or not, I am on the side that Deflection Field should be removed from the ruleset circulation. There are already more than enough cards, in my opinion, to counter the abilities that Deflect counters, that I almost feel bad for the cards that can't utilize their abilities when Deflect was present.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
