[Movie] 🎬 2026 Movie Review #29 | The Father (2020)

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies, Tv-Shows, & Games I consume during a year which enhances my overall experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews. The Father is one of the movies that I have wanted to watch for a long time and I once started it along with my girlfriend but we didn't finish it as it needs your attention and no real fatigue. What I knew about this movie is that it's about a father with dementia with the twist that it's filmed from the perspection of the person with dementia. It gets a whopping 8.2/10 on imdb and it won 2 oscars of the best actor which is fully deserved and Best Adapted Screenplay. It anything, this is not a straightforward movie and it is made with the intention to confuse the audience so you need to be ready for it and even multiple viewings probably are needed.

The Father (7.3/10)

The movie is the story of Anthony who lives in an appartment and has dementia along with his daughter and you experience the days through his mind which makes it so none of it really makes sense as time is not linear and sometimes even actors aren't the same. I always enjoy movies that take place in 1 small area as this one I believe almost fully takes place in the appartment he lives in.

Generally I like more straightforward movies but this one for sure was an experience. However, I feel I would need to watch it a 2nd or a 3rd time to really appreciate it more since there is a lot of symbolism and details that I fully missed. Aparently, the appartment changes during the movie but I didn't notice that. There are some plotlines with the husband on his daughter which I still don't really get which is real and which not. Also some scenes even after watching some YouTube explained I have no real clue what they were.

There also is one scene in the middle of the movie that hits you with some kind of time loop which is done really well and still gives me a bit of the shivers. At the same time I have no real explaination for it.

I enjoyed the environment, the setting and the acting a lot and the movie also has a nice lenght of just under 100 minutes. However, it also feels like one of those 'art' movies made well but too complex to understand after 1 viewing. One of the things I would say is interesting to know is that every scene without Anthony in it is straightforward and real. That would have been nice to know before I watched it.

Conclusion I should give this movie another watch as for me it was just too confusing on the first watch and even looking up some 'Youtube Explained' videos don't really do enough for me as I'm left with too many questions. There is no doubt that this movie is made very well with a ton of detail and symbolism while the acting was superb. I enjoyed it but at the same time don't understand enough for it to blow me away. So a respectable 7.3/10 because it's certainly a memorable movie. I likely won't watch it again though and It's not one I would recommend to many people.

I thoroughly enjoyed the environment, setting, and acting in The Father. The almost single-location apartment setting works beautifully, and the just-under-100-minute runtime is perfect. The time-loop scene in the middle is done really well and genuinely gave me shivers—a testament to how effective the filmmaking is.
