For those who are unaware, I am currently working on a 10 track studio album. A few months ago I released a live album on streaming called “Resonance Experiments 1-2” which features 3 of the songs from the upcoming studio album as well as three jams. This is part of a series of deep dives explaining each track on the live album and context around it.
While The who, what, and why of this whole album are still something I’m not ready to talk about, I am willing to talk about the rough meaning behind certain songs specifically.
There is a larger, overarching concept to this upcoming album which has to do with healing but I can’t say any more than that until I am ready to reveal the title of the album, which is deeply connected to the entire narrative.
For now I can say that there are four songs with specific characters which represent four different kinds of energy. Each of them need to heal from a specific wound and require something specific to heal.
These four songs are meant to provide that character with what it is they need to heal. The other 6 tracks are meant as connective tissues and to create a framework with which to understand this world that the songs exist in.
While “Speaking Leaves”, which I shared a few days ago, is part of that connective tissues, the song I want to share today is one of the four main stories on the album with it’s own character.
“This House and All the Ghosts that Haunt it”
Imagine being born into a prison with no light or sound, only a sense of touch, smell and taste.
Imagine walls thick enough to make escape impossible, but thin enough that sounds creep in from outside. Light passes through a tiny crack, illuminating but a single spot on the wall. A tiny spec of light is all she has, a tiny, faint star in the darkness.
This is the protagonist of the song.
As she prays for contact with the outside world, she comes to realize she is a prisoner who has committed no crime.
Finally she discovers that she must liberate herself and there is only one means available.
This song, along with “Speaking Leaves” and “To Know Where” are the three from this live collection that will be on the upcoming album.
We performed this version on acoustic guitar, though on the album it will be a combination of acoustic and electric.
We’ve also added a follow up song which won’t be on the album but which we play at shows which can make this song reach around 15 minutes total.
In a sense it’s the heart of the album. The second longest song will be about 6:30 seconds so it’s the longest by far, but also it serves as the model for which the other stories will be told.
It was the first song I wrote specifically for the album and inspired its creation in the first place. “Speaking Leaves” and “To Know Where” as well as one other song are old songs which later revealed themselves to be part of this story and so I re-arranged them to fit the narrative, but “This House” is the center pillar.
One of the other 4 stories at the center of the album has short clips up on YouTube, you can guess which one it is if you are interested, or maybe you can get it through process of elimination. The other two haven’t been heard by anyone yet, other than the two of us singing it.
So as this house burns down, keep an eye out for an old woman on the top of a snowy mountain, a man drifting afloat in the ocean, and a boy looking down from the roof of a building. They are our other protagonists. I hope you become familiar with them as they reveal themselves.
