BuzzParty Meet Hive!

London Hive Meetup | October 2026

So the day came and I was in the wrong part of the country. It was an early start to get down to London in time for the 12pm time I'd set for meeting. After letting two packed trains pass through, I managed to get onto the delayed 10:06am and find a seat. Saturdays are murder when football's on.

Thankfully, @livinguktaiwan is less tardy than me and was at Penderel's Oak, the Wetherspoons pub I'd picked out as an easy landmark and meeting place, Hive tote bags scattered possessively over tables, marking out our territory! I was pleased to see her again, we last met up at @c0ff33a's place in Halifax, and delighted to meet @alonicus after several years conversing on Hive.

We were soon joined by @steevc who I've met lots of times, most recently in Bedford, and @adetorrent, who I hadn't seen since a wonderful meet up in Cambridge, pre-Covid, I think, organised by @molometer. And then came @davidthompson57, again a new face for me, and good to meet, especially as he brought Tunnock's tea cakes with him.

The benefit of meeting in Wetherspoon's is that everyone could order what they wanted to eat. Wetherspoon's tend to have a mixed reputation, and not everyone is a fan of their owner for various reasons, but I've found you can get a lot of calories for not much money, they do great Tequila shots and the toilets are usually acceptable.

After lunch, we made our way across High Holborn to the venue in Red Lion Street, just ten minutes walk from Holborn underground station. The space is huge with lots of seating areas, a large conference space that has held about 120 people and several small break out rooms. We were able to have it for a donation.

This would be big enough for Hive Open Days - Saturdays would not be a problem and it would probably be possible to negotiate a Friday as well. In the heart of London, there's lots to see and do just around the block and a short walk away. It's a fascinating part of London.

Organising a bigger event would need a committee - not least to get everyone into the building which involved some interesting multiple opening and closing of lift doors until finally everything was synchronised and I waited until the first lift had departed before calling the second one!

The Donations

Thank you everyone for your donations: cash contributions were left on site on the day, and Hive and HBD contributions (yay!) were donated through the website today.

2027 Organising Group?

There may be an opportunity for another meetup in 2027, somewhere between March and May. If you're interested and would like to be part of an organising group, let me know. We won't be going later than May - the temperatures in Central London can be too demanding after that.

PS I've started adding PeakD as a 3% beneficiary - infinitely preferable to ads.

  • Update: @shanibeer, I paid out 34.620 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 20 comments in this discussion thread.

  • Thanks for organising @shanibeer, and getting such a great venue. It's much better than sitting in a cafe or restaurant. Hopefully we can meet up again

Great initiative, so happy more and more hiveans are talking matter into their hands and are creating events on their own. Much luck in your future plans and get together and great success.

Great post and congrats on the meetup it looks like the venue and location added to the great vibes and good to see a nice turnout of people. if I wasn't going through a hack and Greater Anglia not overcharging for trains, I would have been able to attend. maybe next time :)

It is good to see that meetups seem to be happening more often now. I don't know the exact stats, but looking over the previous years, it seems discussions around meetups are happening far more often. Compared to pre-COVID.

Great to see you had a nice time at the meetup! The place looks awesome, and I can see the next HiveOpenDays (or similar) meetup being held there!

I'm sorry I missed this one, but I will try to not miss the next... Speaking of dates, times, and weekdays, late April-early May sounds perfect for a meetup... As my other half has commitments on Sundays, squeezing in Friday could work very well... Maybe I could even convince her to go... 😃

Thanks for organizing this! It's not an easy task to find the venue, promote, and organize your time for others...

  • Looks like all worked out really well!! You did such a great job organizing this.

  • @bitterirony(65)· 9d

Well done! Always good to see a successive IRL event. Hopefully we can meet at the next one. 🤞

  • @sunshine698(54)· 9d

That sounds like a 'wonderful meet-up'. Just loved reading this and all about it. Lovely pictures taken, of the event. The venue looks great, seems like it could have accommodated a huge gathering for the meet-up.

@steevc -- you look simply gorgeous in this pic! The place seems extremely lovely to sit calmly and talk. More than sure the meeting went super smooth and enjoyable. !PIZZA

Sorry I missed this meetup but I'm determined to make the next one. The venue looks good. Hard to believe that the Cambridge meetup was pre covid. Time sure does fly.

  • @adetorrent(78)· 10d

Thank you for organising this. It'd been a while since I'd seen Hive people in real life.

  • @oflyhigh(87)· 10d

  • Thanks so much for arranging the meetup @shanibeer . This was my first multi person meet so I was a little unsure of how it would go but I need not have been apprehensive as I did enjoy every minute. I was actually quite disappointed that I turned up late due to train problems and a personal timetable issue but the experience has left me looking forward to rhe next meetup.

An excellent writeup as well! I'm glad you enjoyed the teacakes 😁.

  • It feels truly wonderful to know about the Hive members getting together in London! Wishing you all the best for the next meetup.

Thanks so much for setting this up. I think a lot of Hivers wait for someone else to stage an event, but it really is up to each of us and I've done some. The venue would be great for bigger crowds and it's convenient for me. I had met most of those who came, but it's always good to get together.

  • @agmoore(76)· 10d

I see friendship :) Nice in these days to see that anywhere.

  • @wiseagent(82)· 10d

    Hivers, assemble!

True power. The revolution is here.

  • @latinowinner(58)· 10d

looks good when winter season and snow is starting in England

  • @sararossi(70)· 10d

Trying to navigate trains on a match day is a nightmare, so I am impressed you made it there at all. It sounds like such a solid group to catch up with, and honestly, you cannot go wrong with Tunnock's tea cakes at a meetup.

  • @kryptonita(71)· 10d
