Bitcoin News: Bitcoin Improvement Protocol 110

🗒️ What is BIP-110?

BIP-110 was a proposed rule change for Bitcoin that aimed to limit the amount of non-financial data stored inside the network. BIP stands for Bitcoin Improvement Proposal. This is a formal document that developers use to suggest changes to how Bitcoin works. To understand why this change was suggested, it helps to look at how Bitcoin records information.

📊 Financial vs. Non-Financial Data

Users can add two different types of information to the Bitcoin network:

  • Financial Data: This is the core information needed to move money. It includes basic text and numbers, such as the digital signatures, the sender's account address, the receiver's account address, and the amount of Bitcoin being sent.
  • Non-Financial Data: This is any extra information added to a transaction that is not required to move money. Examples include digital art files (like Ordinals), video clips, text messages, or code for creating custom tokens.

⛏️ How the Ledger Records This Data

Bitcoin tracks all of this information using a shared digital record book called a blockchain.

  • The Pages: You can think of this digital ledger like a notebook, where each block is a single page. Because a page only has so much physical room, a Bitcoin block has a strict digital size limit.
  • The Waiting Line: Financial data takes up very little space because it is just basic numbers and text. Non-financial data, like an image file, takes up much more digital space. When a page fills up with large image files, there is less room left for other transactions. As a result, some regular financial transactions have to wait in line for the next page to be made before they can be recorded.
  • The Miners: Special computers called miners collect transactions from the waiting line and write them onto a new page. Miners compete to process these pages by solving complex mathematical puzzles. In exchange for their work, they earn newly created Bitcoin and transaction fees.

⚙️ The Problem and the BIP-110 Proposal

Because large non-financial files were making the waiting line longer for regular financial payments, a developer introduced BIP-110 (also known as the Reduced Data Temporary Softfork). This proposal aimed to temporarily change how the network handles transaction sizes for about one year.

  • Data Limits: The proposal outlined seven specific technical restrictions on data size.
  • Rejection Mechanism: Transactions exceeding these limits would be automatically turned away by the network, preventing large files from being added to the pages.

⚖️ The Community Discussion

The Bitcoin community had differing viewpoints on whether this new rule was a good idea.

  • Supporters believed that the network should prioritize standard currency transactions. They argued that keeping transactions small would eliminate the waiting line, lower fees, and keep the system accessible for everyday financial transfers.
  • Critics believed that the network should remain completely open. They argued that as long as a user pays the required network fee, they should have the right to include any data they choose without restrictions.

📉 How the Vote Turned Out

Because Bitcoin has no central boss or company, the network changes its rules through a voting process called signaling. When miners solve a block, they include a special code to show if they agree with a new rule. Usually, a large majority (like 90% or 95%) must agree for a rule to pass. BIP-110 attempted to activate in August 2026, but it did not pass. It received less than 3% support from the network's miners. While a small group of users attempted to start their own version of Bitcoin using these rules, they gave up after making only two pages. The primary Bitcoin network rejected the change and continues to operate under its existing rules.

If you want to refine this further, let me know if you would like to:

  • Explain how transaction fees affect who gets on the page first
  • Explain the exact size difference between a text payment and a digital image
  • Explain the differences between a soft fork and a hard fork

If there is a problem like this on the network, it is important to eliminate it because Bitcoin is going to become even more popular in the coming time and more things will become clear.

I have learned a lot from this post. Previously, there was not much knowledge about transactions, but now people are slowly getting it,

Every human being speaks what they want. Now that this is an update, people probably won't like it because the data should be everywhere. People will see it later

I wonder how much the simle desire to lead one's own bitcoin developer group played in this? This idea sounds antithetical to bitcoin.

So bitcoiners were voting for censorship?
