The Oratory of the Virgin of the Assumption in Serravalle Pistoiese.

Hello hivers, an happy Sunday to you all! It's a rainy Sunday here and I think me and my hubby @paolobeneforti will spend the most part of the day in relax at home. This is good for us, because yesterday we had a very busy Saturday from the morning to the late afternoon and so we appreciate a day in relax. 😁 One of the things we did yesterday was to go in a beautiful small village not far from our city: Serravalle Pistoiese. We went there because there was an event about the armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan. One of our friends who is an artist I love so much worked on some tales written by Tumanyan to create an artist book that now is placed in a armenian museum, so he organised a meeting about it in a wonderful place known as "House of pictures" in Serravalle.

This place, discovered in the 1980s, was the ancient Oratory of the Vergine Assunta (in englis is "Virgin of the Assumption"), built and painting in the late 14th century. At the end of the 1700 the religious company there was suppressed and so that ancient building became a civilian residence. It was divided in 4 rooms and, for centuries, the paintings remained hidden under layers of plaster. Thanks some works to renovation in the '80 the paintings came back to light and now we can watch those beautiful ancient paintings on the walls.

One of the painting on the walls:

When you enter inside the Oratory, in front of you, you can see a painting about the Crucifixion:

The paintings came back to the light were half-destroyed, but the part still in good condition are really wonderful.

Inside of the oratory there are painting that represent the Passion of Christ and a large one to represent the Last Judgment divided into 3 levels : the lower one where there are the damned souls (with a devil in a corner), in the middle level there are the Apostles and in the upper level we can see the Madonna with Jesus with flying angels.

In the following pic you can see the detail where is the devil:

Just to share with you the corner of the village where is located the Oratory, I took some pics around before to arrive in front of that wonderful "House of pictures":

Well, now I come back to my very relaxing time sitting on the sofa with my furry friends Bimba, Nanny and Nerone, wishing you a wonderful Sunday to spend in your favorite way. ❤️

See ya soon and stay safe, Silvia

It's amazing that the paintings survived. There have been some cases like that here. Tastes change over the years and people re-decorate.

These religious paintings are very old! It’s a good thing they kept them instead of throwing them away. They hold a lot of history and meaning.
