If there’s one thing that relaxes my body and mind, it’s walking in nature; I’ve learnt that, in moments of sadness, worry or even physical pain, a good walk makes me feel better. Walking gets my body moving and, if I focus on observing nature at the same time, both of these things calm my mind; I take a deep breath and, afterwards, I can come home tired yet feeling light.
Years ago, I could have said that going out to discover new places was my favourite pastime; I loved setting myself goals, working and saving up to go on a trip and get away from home for a few days. Who doesn’t love a bit of sightseeing? But life changes, and with it, so do our responsibilities; at the moment, I can’t get away from home, and if I do, I have to be back within a few hours, so the routine feels stifling for someone who loves to explore. And although I live in a big house with a spacious garden and large trees, I still need to get out of these four walls every now and then.

That’s why my current refuge is the park in the community where I live – a place at the other end of my neighbourhood that takes me 25 minutes to reach and the same again to get back. There’s an indoor track, some fitness equipment, a children’s playground with swings and a seesaw, and my favourite spot is a flat area at the foot of two large trees.
Walking, contemplating and meditating are my hobbies
When I get there, I sit down to feel the breeze caressing my face, to enjoy the sun, to listen to the birdsong and to breathe deeply whilst gazing at the trees. These are moments when I don’t think – I try not to think so that I can immerse myself in contemplating the beauty around me; after a few minutes, I start to feel grateful for everything.

Have you been practising this hobby for a long time?
Not really, actually – only about two years, when I found myself needing to find ways to deal with my unease and emotional discomfort. I had to do something that would make me feel good, and I always knew the answer lay in nature.
Why do you practise this hobby in nature?
I’m someone who respects nature; I like and love animals; feeling surrounded by them relaxes me and it’s the perfect setting for reflection and meditation. It’s scientifically proven that our surroundings influence our thoughts, and nature is the best place to practise meditation or contemplation.
What benefits does it bring you, both spiritually and in terms of your health?
It restores my spirits and motivation; every time I connect with nature, I recharge my batteries and feel myself regaining joy and health – first mentally, then spiritually – and ultimately, all of this has a positive impact on my physical health.

What would you like to do in the future with this interest in nature?
I’d like to join a holistic meditation group, with sounds and practices that my family members can attend – and, if possible, our pets too 😆.
Would it be the same practising it in the city?
Outside of green spaces, such as squares and parks, it’s very hard to concentrate and achieve proper relaxation; if there are distractions like annoying noises, car horns and people talking, it’s not ideal. That said, if there are parks in the city that lend themselves to this activity, it can be done.
Most of the time when I go for a walk, I don’t go on my own; I’m always accompanied by either my brother Luis or my aunt Martina, and the one who never misses these walks is my dog Duke, who is another living being who really enjoys these walks. In fact, he’s been my main reason for leaving the house, because sometimes I don’t feel like doing anything, but for his sake I go out and then I feel happy; on this occasion, you can see the pleasure he’s feeling and his curious reactions to the strange sounds 😅
This has been my entry for the Amazing Nature community competition for August, which focused on my love of nature. I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to join @irenenavarroart, @sugarelys, @mairene1 and @annafenix. Thank you for reading and for your support.
