Welcome to a look back at another of my birthdays: on this occasion, when I turned 42, after my 38th birthday, a lot happened between then and the age I’m celebrating in this post today. Among the events that shaped my life over those four years was a change of home: I moved from my parents’ house back to the house where I grew up and spent my childhood – my grandmother’s house. The reason for returning was to help my mum look after my grandmother. We’re still going through this process and it’s been several years now.
At that time, something very unusual was happening in my country: there was a food shortage and 90 per cent of the population had lost a lot of weight. You couldn’t find flour to make arepas or refined sugar, so we ate a lot of vegetables and played with ‘papelón’, a compound made from natural sugar cane. Apart from the food shortages, there was no public transport because spare parts were very expensive and vehicles kept breaking down; this meant we had to walk several kilometres a day – that’s what I remember. Also, at that very time, I was undergoing a detox programme with a naturopathic doctor who cut out pasta, bread and rice for three months. As the treatment was expensive, I followed it to the letter, losing a lot of weight; in the photos you can see me weighing 53 kilos 😱😁. To be honest, I loved being slim – it made me look like a little girl and I felt lighter 😅.
On that birthday, I didn’t look 42; I usually looked younger than my age. On that occasion, my mum and dad gave me the cake – actually, there were three of them involved, because the person who made it, a family friend, didn’t charge for her time either, as she was one of the guests, ha ha ha. I spent that evening with my family; we ate cake and sat chatting and laughing about everything – it was a relaxing moment despite the current situation. By the end of the evening, I felt content, loved, blessed, and full of joy and optimism.

Para esa fecha sucedía algo muy particular en mi país, estaba la escasez de alimentos y el 90% de la población bajo mucho peso, no se encontraba la harina para hacer arepas ni el azúcar procesado, entonces se comía mucha verdura y los juegos eran con papelón un compuesto de la caña de azúcar natural. Aparte de la escasez de alimentos no había transporte público porque los repuestos eran muy costosos y se fueron dañando, eso hizo que camináramos demasiado varios kilómetros al día, es lo que recuerdo, además justo en ese tiempo yo estuve haciendo una depuración con un médico naturópata que me quitó las pastas, el pan y el arroz por tres meses, como el tratamiento era costoso lo hice al pie de la letra, bajando mucho de peso, en las fotos me pueden ver con 53 kilos 😱😁 la verdad, me encantaba ser delgada me hacía lucir como una niña y me sentía más liviana 😅.
En ese cumpleaños no aparentaba tener 42 años, por lo general me veía más joven de lo normal. En esa oportunidad mi mamá y mi papá me regalaron el pastel, en realidad fueron 3 personas, porque quien lo hizo una amiga de la familia tampoco cobró su mano de obra, pues era una de las invitadas ja, ja, ja. Esa noche la pasé en familia y comimos pastel y nos sentamos a charlar y a reírnos de todo, fue un momento relajante a pesar de la situación actual. Al final de la noche me sentí satisfecha, amada, bendecida, llena de alegría y optimismo.
