New glass and a clearer view of opportunities

A few weeks ago, I was out and about in the neighbourhood explaining that I needed to replace the window panes because they were broken and some were missing; I remember that not long ago I took it upon myself to break the damaged panes and remove them completely, as my grandmother – who at the time was still able to walk unaided – used to stick her hand and fingers into those broken windows, a result of her senile memory, and to prevent her from cutting herself, I ended up taking them out.
These windows are very old; I’d go so far as to say they’re my age, because they’ve been there for as long as I can remember. Over time, they’ve gradually cracked, and the recent earthquake that hit my country caused further damage. A house with broken windows or missing panes gives the impression of neglect and, energetically speaking, doesn’t attract anything good; that’s why my mum and I decided to improve this part of the house, amongst so many other things that need repairing, but we’re taking it one step at a time.

Hace unas semanas estuve en la comunidad mostrando la necesidad que tenía de cambiar los vidrios de las ventanas porque estaban partidos y en algunas faltaban, recuerdo que no hace mucho yo misma tomé la tarea de partir vidrios dañados y sacarlos por completo, ya que mi abuela que en ese entonces caminaba sola le gustaba meter la mano y los dedos en esas ventanas partidas tremenduras de su memoria senil y para evitar que se cortara yo las terminé quitando.
Estas ventanas tienen muchos años me atrevo a decir que son de mi edad, porque desde que tengo memoria existen las mismas ventanas, con el pasar del tiempo se han ido quebrando y con el reciente terremoto que vivió mi país se fracturaron más. Una casa con ventanas rotas o que falten vidrios da la impresión de abandono y energéticamente no atrae nada bueno, por eso mi mamá y yo nos decidimos en mejorar esta parte de la casa, entre tantas cosas que requieren reparación, pero vamos un paso a la vez.
I went to get a quote for the glass and to choose the design, but unfortunately the type of glass used in those windows is no longer available; those models are old and can’t be found in any glass shop. I walked a long way to see if I could find them, or at least something similar, but it was in vain. In the end, I had to settle for the type used nowadays, which is a white frosted glass. In the quote, I only included the glass we needed – the broken panes and the missing ones. When the man who was going to do the work at our house arrived, we came up with an idea.
To avoid having windows with different styles of glass, we thought we could remove the intact panes and use them to complete the window with the fewest missing pieces, and so fit the new ones in one window entirely – I hope that makes sense. Anyway, this idea didn’t work. The man, with great patience, tried it on two panes, but they were stuck together too tightly and ended up breaking, so that pushed up the initial quote 😵💫🤦🏼♀️.
Fui a buscar presupuesto de vidrios y a escoger el diseño y lamentablemente ya no salen los vidrios que tienen las ventanas, esos modelos son antiguos y no se encuentran en ninguna vidriera, caminé mucho para ver si los encontraba o por lo menos parecido, pero fue en vano, al final tuve que decidirme por el que se usan actualmente que es un vidrio blanco empañado. En el presupuesto metí solo los vidrios que necesitábamos, los que estaban partidos y los que faltaban, cuando llegó el señor que nos iba a hacer el trabajo en casa se nos ocurrió una idea.
Para que no quedaran las ventanas con vidrios de diferentes diseños pensamos que se podían despegar los buenos y completar en la ventana que menos le faltará y así poner los nuevos en una sola por completo, no sé si me explico. En fin esta idea no funcionó el señor con mucha paciencia lo intentó en dos vidrios, pero están demasiado pegados y terminan partiéndose, entonces eso elevó el presupuesto inicial 😵💫🤦🏼♀️.
Once I’d got the money, I went to the glaziers to have the cuts made, but that took another week, as they’d run out of glass; and once it arrived, they had to send it to another city to be tempered and have the design applied – and it all depends on the electricity supply; with the power cuts Venezuela is suffering, every business is experiencing delays with orders. Well, that gave me the chance to buy the silicone and get the man to give the frames a proper clean.
I thought this job would be quick and easy, but I was wrong; the man had to use a grinder and it took him seven hours to clean the frames of the old putty.
Did you know that windows are like the eyes of your home? Let me explain: just as our body is the home of the soul, our house is the home of the body and also has parts that represent the body. In this case, the windows are the eyes of our home, and if they’re cracked, broken or dirty and we can’t see out onto the street or at people, that means we won’t be able to see the opportunities that lie ahead either. It’s essential to have good windows so that our home feels right. 😁
Una vez que tuve el dinero, fui a la vidriera a mandar hacer los cortes, pero eso demoró otra semana, ya que se habían quedado sin vidrios y una vez que le llegaran tenían que enviarlos a otra ciudad a templarlos y hacerles el diseño, y todo depende de la electricidad que con los racionamientos que sufre Venezuela todo negocio se atrasa en pedidos. Bueno eso me dio la oportunidad de comprar el silicon y al señor de limpiar bien los marcos.
Pensé que este trabajo era rápido y sin tanto esfuerzo, pero me equivoque, el señor tuvo que usar esmeril y se llevó 7 horas limpiando los marcos del mastique antiguó.

With the panes ready and on the second day of work, the gentleman applied the silicone and I was his assistant – please overlook my style 😎 😅. We fitted 12 panes and used two pots of silicone; we still need to buy a small pot because we’ve got to seal the windows in one room from the inside. In total, we spent $50 on the glass and $15 on the silicone and the gun, plus $30 for labour. You could say it all came to $100 😥. And in the end, the windows didn’t look great with all the same type of glass, but they certainly look better than before. 😉

Con los vidrios listos y en el segundo día de trabajo el señor aplicó el silicon y yo fui su ayudante, obvien mi estilo 😎 por favor 😅. Se pegaron 12 vidrios y se usaron 2 potes de silicon, aún falta comprar un pote pequeño porque faltan sellar las ventanas de un cuarto por dentro. En total se gastó en los vidrios 50 $ y en los silicon y la pistola 15 $, más 30 $ de la mano de obra. Se puede decir que todo salió en 100 $ 😥. Y al final las ventanas no quedaron bonitos con un mismo vidrio, pero sin duda quedaron mejor. 😉
