A Bug's Life

Flik, a restless and clumsy little ant, recruits the unemployed members of a bug circus, believing they are warriors who will protect them from the evil grasshoppers. Another Pixar movie, released in 1998, that I would definitely recommend watching!

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • Wonderful, well-written characters.
  • What an enjoyable movie... it's such an easy and pleasant watch.
  • Cute storyline.
  • The finale is awesome and pretty funny.
  • The central theme of the movie is bullying and how you can stand up to it.
  • Pixar's second movie after Toy Story, yet the animation is still very good.
  • Excellent voice casting.

  • I would have liked a little more action. It's fairly "mild," even though it's very enjoyable.
  • A liiiittle predictable story-wise, although it doesn't really bother me.
  • The pacing is slower in some parts.

Overall, while I consider it a good Pixar movie, I don't think it has stood out as much as it deserved to.

Exit 8

A man trapped in an endless and barren subway corridor sets out to find Exit 8. The rules of his mission are simple: if he discovers an anomaly, he must immediately turn back. If he doesn't find anything, he keeps going. Is it worth watching?

🟢🟢🟢🟢

  • It criticizes isolation and egocentrism, and I have to say it does so extremely well.
  • It uses repetition to create a sense of unease, and to some extent, it succeeds.
  • Thankfully, it also makes use of other characters as the movie progresses.
  • Social commentary on workaholism.
  • Cinematic minimalism.

🔴🔴🔴🔴

  • I was booooreeed. The same thing over and over again. Yes, there was a deeper meaning behind it, but in quite a few places it became tiring.
  • It's not as scary as it wants to be, at least in my eyes.
  • The minimalist execution felt like it was missing something. On the other hand, I haven't played the video game it's based on 🤷‍♂️.
  • The ending felt slightly "forced."
  • Japanese thrillers almost always rely on atmosphere. There's certainly some of that here, but I can't say it was particularly effective.
  • The characters aren't developed or explored enough.
  • The whole premise felt rather uninteresting to me.
  • The "metaphorical" journey toward adulthood and taking responsibility is nice in theory, but it didn't work for me either practically or visually.
