Today, I learnt a new word: finifugal.
Basically it is an adjective. It means the tendency to resist endings, cool isn't it? The reluctance to let something come to an end because you wish it to continue a little longer.
I can vouch for this feeling. Some books; some shows are this way for me.
Time for some yapping on this new discovery.
I mean there is really strange feeling that comes with endings. It does not even need to be sadness related, nor fear neither embarrassing; rather a peculiar reluctance to let go of something that has become dear to us.
And I believe that most of us are finifugal in our own ways.Yes I am generalising.
As said earlier, from my personal experience, have you ever finished a book and found yourself wanting it to continue? Or watched the final episode of a series and wished you do not have to say goodbye to the characters? Maybe you have sat with friends or lover for hours, only to find yourself extending it over nothing.
Or more recently, sometimes, one even wants to stay in the car for a few extra minutes. The engine is off, the journey is over and there is absolutely no practical reason to stay. Yet, somehow, I end up doing it.
But the thing is: are we really afraid of endings?
Well, nope! I think we are just simply attached to the versions of ourselves that exist within those little moments.
Because endings are not just endings. They are more than that. They are also about accepting that something which existed, and now we call it a beautiful memory. A place becomes a photograph, a conversation becomes a moment of laughter and those people who were part of our daily lives - friends forever - becomes WhatsApp hello-hi.
Maybe that is the reason behind us negotiating with time. Sometimes, I just postpone the final episode, just so I get rid of the addiction. Funny thing is, it actually works.
But hey, there is binnary to this side as well. Not everything needs to be prolonged. Some chapters - the harsh one - need to close. However, we let those moments stay with us for eternity.
But none is at fault here. Those moments were meant to stay with us for eternity. Because, sometimes, we are not always afraid of the future; we are just reluctant to leave a present that feels like home.
