Last Calls

Last Calls

If there was only one sunrise left, one sunset left to report, What would be the last act, the last word, the last thought? What would linger on after the darkness fell to ground, And where would that leave the future, when no one is around?

A last drink, a last laugh, a last feeling of shame, Who looks back from the mirror, when there's no one else to blame? Not even paved with good intentions, for what was intended gave, And once finally in hand, will recognition adorn the grave?

The green of eye, the green of tree, the green of profit first, The green of envy and jealousy, is there no end to this thirst? Drink it up and push it down, tricked with the easiest of swaps, Attraction and distraction, the bars of the prison that shops?

No way ahead, no way back, no way to change the course, No will to to even try to change, no choice except by force? Close the eyes and surrender, for there is no decision to make, The world of humanity stolen, and there's nothing left to take.

One sunrise left, one sunset until the final sign. Make a move, speak a mind, think for the last time. For that darkness comes for us all on this very day, All proof of who we were, will all be washed away.

I have some photos we have taken through the years where my wife and I are standing with the sunset behind us and she is kissing me on the cheek. I think that is what I would like my last one to be like.

If I knew today was my last day, I think I would spend it with the people I love and say the things I normally keep to myself. Sometimes we don't realize how important those simple moments are until we think about losing them.

The green stanza feels like the real heart of it. Makes me wonder if the poem isn't just about death, but about how we're already living inside that prison, sunrise after sunrise, without needing an ending to force the question.

  • Having our last meal and knowing it mean a lot, I’m sure many of us will seek forgiveness and mend all what seems to be broken in their life. Some would probably make restitution if need be. As the saying goes that no one wants to die but to want to make heaven. If only we can think of every day of our life as if we are going to be no one then this life will certainly be a better place for us all.

Everything matters. Every step in this universe matters for the future. For here, all things are finite, while there, they are infinite.

That is the meaning of life. Some people come here as tourists and stay in expensive hotels, taking in the sights. Others drive a taxi from morning till night, never noticing the beauty around them.

  • I often find myself spending too much time worrying about things that won't really matter in the end, and I think this reduces the quality of my life.

I do not feel this way when those I love die, and I sure hope no one that I love feels this way when I have watched my last sunset or said my final words. Instead, the departed grow in me, respond through me, shape who I am and will become. They still live! I feel my distant ancestors this way as well, so it will, hopefully, be a very long time before all proof of who I am this moment will forever be washed away.

In these lines lies the gravity of someone who no longer seeks easy answers, but dares to ask the questions that others avoid. One senses the weariness of watching as the ‘green’ devours everything, but also the dignity of someone who refuses to close their eyes before the end.

  • Do you think that people tend to understand what matters most to them when only a limited amount of time remains
