a few cool historic properties in Fairhaven MA

Good morning, and have a great day

Recently, I was in Fairhaven to catch the sunrise at Fort Phoenix, but after the sunrise, I decided to stop in Fairhaven and take a walk, as they have some cool historic buildings there, and today I will share a few photos I took that morning.

Starting with the First Congregational Church located on Center Street and was built around 1844–1845. It features a distinct red brick Gothic Revival design with a prominent four-stage bell tower

The congregation represents the oldest religious group in Fairhaven. It was originally established on July 23, 1794, at that time, New Bedford still included the lands of present-day Fairhaven and Acushnet.

An interesting detail I just read about: Their original meeting house featured a bell purchased directly from the historic foundry of Paul Revere in 1796.

That original bell hung in the old church cupola until 1914, when it was bought by the town selectmen to serve as a fire alarm for the Oxford School

And next up The Millicent Library, located in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, is a striking Richardsonian Romanesque masterpiece designed by architect Charles Brigham. Dedicated on January 30, 1893, the library was given to the town by the wealthy industrialist and Standard Oil tycoon Henry Huttleston Rogers as a memorial to his daughter, Millicent, who tragically passed away at age 17. The building features rugged granite block construction, terracotta accents, a prominent conical tower, and exceptional stained-glass windows—including one portraying Millicent herself as the Greek goddess of poetry

And the town hall Standard Oil industrialist Henry Huttleston Rogers and his first wife, Abbie, gave the building as a gift to the town. It was designed by Charles Brigham , and it opened in 1892.Original

It originally held town offices, a post office, and a police station complete with three iron-barred jail cells

And lastly the Memorial Unitarian Church Erected around 1901 and was also a gift from industrialist Henry Huttleston Rogers in memory of his mother.
