Sweets are a treat that people have enjoyed for thousands upon thousands of years which is hardly surprising, given that they not only taste good but also provide a quick dose of carbohydrates to those who eat them. National Candy Day is celebrated every year on November 4th.

The history of sweets is much clearer than the origins of the celebration itself. Sweets date back to prehistoric times, and many ancient cultures created their own versions. Arab, Egyptian, and Chinese cultures made sweets using fruits and nuts, while the ancient Greeks crafted them from fruits and flowers. The Aztecs and Mayans also made sweets using various fruits and the sacred cacao bean. During the 19th century, a variety of soft and hard candies became popular in both the United States and Europe.

Among these sweets were lemon drops, mints, candy corn, candies with messages, Twizzlers, and Tootsie Rolls. Although chocolate bars existed before the turn of the 20th century, they became popular during the First World War. This is because the United States Army commissioned American chocolate manufacturers to produce chocolate bars weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) to be sent to U.S. soldiers stationed in Europe. These massive chocolate bars were broken into pieces and distributed among the soldiers. As a result, in the years following the war, there were more than 40 different types of chocolate bars. However, due to competition, only a few of these varieties exist today.
