How my relaxing weekend by the Sea turned into a Medical Drama

In my circle of friends, we’ve reached the stage where almost everyone has babies. And of course, that means a LOT of names to remember and a LOT of birthday parties to attend. And when you don’t have kids yourself, buying gifts is freaking hard because kids these days already have a LOOOOT of stuff! Seriously, what do you buy a one-year-old who probably has more toys than you have clothes? 😂

Anyway, this weekend our beautiful Karlo celebrated his first birthday, and since my friend lives in another part of Slovenia, near the sea, I thought, why not make a little trip out of it? I would get to see the beautiful sea, probably for the last time this year, and guess what? It was still pretty warm! The first thing I did before we hit the road was check the sea temperature, and guess what? 22 degrees Celsius! 😍 So, obviously, I had a very important decision to make...should I take my swimsuit or not? My husband wasn't interested in the idea, and neither was my friend, but you know what? I'm a strong, independent woman! Let's take it with me, jump into the sea, and show all those weak people how it's done! 😂😂

On Saturday, the four of us hit the road...me, my husband, and two friends, all without kids, heading to a KIDS' birthday party. 😂 That meant the party probably wouldn't last long, there wouldn't be much alcohol, but there would definitely be a LOOOOT of food! And honestly, that sounded like a pretty good deal to me. After a three-hour drive, we finally arrived, and yes, we were the only four people without kids. 😉 Karlo looked happy to see us at first, but after about a minute, he became much more interested in the little stones and random things on the ground. Apparently, crawling around and exploring the floor was way more exciting than spending time in my arms. Okay, Karlo, I get it. You have a whole world down there to explore, and I'm just a boring adult. 😂

A few minutes later, our friend came running over with beers for us because apparently, we looked like we desperately needed some energy. Hmmm, okay, why not? 😂 After lots of food, a few beers, endless conversations, and so much laughing, I somehow ended up becoming the official dog babysitter. Ema chose me and gave me those adorable eyes, practically begging me to take her for a little walk because all the kids wanted to play with her, and she clearly wasn't having the time of her life. So, of course, I took her for a walk, and I think she was very grateful because afterwards, she barely left my side. At least someone at this party appreciated my company! 😂❤️

I must say, we were pretty happy that the birthday party didn't last too long because it seemed that we were all getting sleepy, although nobody wanted to admit it. Apparently, people without kids also enjoy leaving parties early and going to bed! 😂 It really looks like partying until 5 a.m. is no longer our thing. I mean, give me good food, a few drinks, some laughs, and my bed, and I'm a happy woman!

The four of us were staying in a small apartment near the sea, and naturally, when we got back, we couldn't just go to sleep like normal people. Oh no! Someone started talking about something interesting, then someone else had a different opinion, and suddenly we were discussing everything imaginable. And because our opinions didn't exactly match, there was absolutely no way to end the conversation and go to bed. We HAD to save the world! Did we save it? Absolutely not. But my stomach still hurts from laughing so much, so at least we achieved something important. 😂

When we finally woke up the next morning, our first thought was to go and drink coffee by the sea while enjoying the last rays of sunshine. Sounds perfect, right? Well, we had to leave the apartment by 11 a.m., so we quickly packed our stuff and got ready to leave. My husband and our friend asked me if I had any pills for their headaches, probably caused by all the talking the night before, and I proudly announced that I had Nalgesin. Big blue pills! I handed them over, feeling like a very useful person, and a few minutes later, my husband suddenly jumped up and started panicking, asking me what pill I had given him.

I told him, and he started screaming.

WAIT... WHAT?!

He was scratching his entire body, rushed into the shower, and snapped at me, asking if I had forgotten that he had already had an allergic reaction the previous TWO times he took that pill. Excuse me?! If I remember correctly, it had happened twice during the previous year, but we had never figured out exactly what caused the reaction, and he had STILL never gone for an allergy test, despite me telling him about a hundred times to make an appointment. 🙄

Of course, I started panicking because, HELLO, I had just given him a pill! I was probably panicking even more than he was because we didn't have any allergy medication with us. Red spots started appearing all over his body, his skin was itching and burning, and his legs began to swell. At that point, I told him I was calling an ambulance, and this IDIOT told me no! Apparently, I was supposed to go to the pharmacy and buy allergy pills and some cream instead.

ARE YOU FREAKING CRAZY?!

YOUR FACE CAN GET SWOLLEN, AND YOU DON'T WANT ME TO CALL AN AMBULANCE?!

But no, according to him, it had happened before, and taking allergy pills had helped. I was furious and terrified at the same time, especially because it was SUNDAY, and I had no idea where the nearest open pharmacy was. Luckily, it was only a few minutes away, so I ran there, bought the medication and cream, and ran back as quickly as possible. I gave him the medication, applied the cream all over his body, and begged him to go to the hospital, but, of course, this stubborn man refused AGAIN. 🤦‍♀️

He kept telling me that everything would be better in a few minutes, and I told him that if he wasn't getting better, I didn't care what he said because I was calling an ambulance.

Thankfully, the swelling started to go down. I was still absolutely NOT convinced that staying home was a good idea because his whole body was still itching, but this man is unbelievably stubborn. He told me he just needed to sleep for half an hour, and everything would be fine.

WHAT THE HELL?!

Luckily, we were allowed to stay in the apartment for another hour, so I didn't have to rush him straight into the car. I didn't want our friends to spend their morning watching over this stubborn man, so they went out for coffee while I stayed behind to keep an eye on him. Because, apparently, I'm not just a wife, but also a nurse, a pharmacist, and an emergency response team. 😂

After about an hour, he seemed much better. His feet were still a little swollen, but the rest of his body looked better, and he was finally calming down. We decided to get into the car and head home, but since he wasn't in a condition to drive safely, our friend kindly offered to drive us. My husband asked me to sit in the back seat with him because he wanted to lie down and rest his head on my legs. So there I was, sitting in the back seat, taking care of my grown-up child while our friend drove us home. What a lovely Sunday morning! 😂

I honestly didn't know whether I should be angry with him or feel sorry for him. The problem was that we had never been completely sure what was causing these allergic reactions because he had taken those pills many times before without any problems. The reactions had happened twice during the previous year, and every time I asked him to go for an allergy test, he promised he would do it. And then, of course, he never did. 🙄

IMG_1357.jpeg

After about an hour of driving, we started getting hungry, and I noticed that my husband was talking A LOT. And let me tell you something...when this man starts talking nonstop, I know he's feeling better. 😂 So we stopped at a restaurant to get something to eat, and while we were having lunch, he suddenly looked at me and said, "You know what? Now we can say for sure that I'm allergic to those pills. We just needed to test it one more time to be sure!"

I ALMOST PUNCHED HIM IN THE FACE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RESTAURANT. 😂😂😂

I had spent the entire morning panicking, feeling terrible, worrying about him, and trying to convince him to go to the hospital, and now he was making jokes about it?! EXCUSE ME, SIR?!

I told him that next time anything like this happened, I would call an ambulance no matter what he said, and his answer was that it wouldn't happen again because he would never take that pill anymore.

OH. MY. GOD.

YOU ABSOLUTE IDIOT! 😂

The problem is that we still don't know exactly which ingredient caused the allergic reaction, and other medications might contain the same or similar ingredients. Avoiding that one pill doesn't necessarily mean he's safe from another reaction. I tried explaining this to him, and he looked at me for a moment before finally admitting that maybe, just maybe, it would be a good idea to get an allergy test after all.

NO SHIT, SHERLOCK!

Guess what happened next? Of course, he forgot to call the doctor and make an appointment. Because, you know, he was feeling better now, so why would he need to think about what happened the day before? 😂 Luckily, I'm a good wife, so I made the appointment for the following week myself. You're welcome, darling!

And that's how our lovely weekend by the sea turned into a birthday party, a sleepless night full of conversations, an unexpected medical emergency, and me becoming a full-time nurse to a grown man who refuses to listen to me. 😂

Oh boy, he definitely owes me a coffee by the sea. And maybe a visit to a thermal spa, because my swimsuit stayed in the suitcase the entire weekend and never got the chance to touch the water. I was ready to be that strong woman who jumps into the sea while everyone else is too scared, but instead, I spent my Sunday worrying about my husband's swollen face. Life really knows how to ruin your plans! 😂

And then people ask me why I don't have kids.

BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE ONE! 😂😂😂
