Sega Dreamcast Finally Getting Its Halo

I remember the rumors back in the day, the ones claiming that the original Xbox was basically the Sega Dreamcast 2, what if X game was ported to Sega Dreamcast, etc. Well, thanks to a fan on X, we no longer have to wonder what Halo Combat Evolved might have looked like had Microsoft ported it to Sega’s final console. It is real and it is coming, the real question is, how? Spoiler, I do not know.

Welcome Halo Dreamcast Evolved, Everyone

The developer, Jilted Valkyrie, has been working on this port for a while now. The unique thing here is, they are not just porting Halo Combat Evolved to the Sega Dreamcast, they have it running on iOS, Android, Linux and even the Nintendo 64 according to Yahoo! Tech. I am not going to go into detailing each version considering there is no publicly available download for any of these, yet.

I am focusing on the Dreamcast version because that is the console that interests me most out of the reported ports.

Scale Back Expectations

Before you go thinking this port is on par with the original Xbox version pixel for pixel, I am going to need you to take off the rose colored nostalgia glasses. The Sega Dreamcast is simply not that powerful, no matter how well you convinced yourself in the last 25 or so years, it is still quite limited.

From a basic perusal of available content, it seems the CPU is the holdup in making Halo Dreamcast Evolved more impressive. This is definitely going to be a problem for many more complicated, higher profile, ports to Sega’s last console. Especially since there is no current CPU upgrade mod that I am aware of – mostly just replacements for the proprietary GD-Rom drive itself.

Check out the above embedded video and wait with me for a public release of the files. Hopefully before Microsoft drops the ban hammer on this project and removes it from our grasp before we even got to load it.

The Dreamcast runs a version of Windows CE, as I recall, so there should be soem compatibility options with Windows games if you optimize them enough to work with the hardware. It was a pretty sweet machine when it launched, but the PS2 completely blew it out of the water when it released.

that dreamcast 2 rumor was everywhere back then. the cpu limitation makes total sense though since getting halo running on that hardware at all is pretty wild.
