Hello Hives,
This week's topic really caught my attention because it is something I have personally noticed during my time on Hive. We have seen many people join this platform with excitement, make their first posts, introduce themselves, and start exploring. But unfortunately, many of those accounts don't stay for long.
Sometimes I look at accounts that were once active and wonder what happened to the people behind them. They were posting regularly, commenting, interacting and trying to understand Hive. Then, after a few weeks or months, everything suddenly stops.
So, why do people leave?
From my own experience, I think one of the biggest reasons is that Hive can be confusing when you are new.
I remember when I was still trying to understand how everything worked. There were so many things to learn — keys, wallets, Hive Power, HBD, communities, different frontends, voting, curation and rewards. It can be a lot for someone who is just arriving.
And sometimes, a newbie may not even know where to ask for help.
Another issue is expectations.
Someone may join Hive after hearing that people earn from creating content. They become excited and start posting immediately, expecting to see good rewards. But when the rewards don't come as quickly as they expected, disappointment can set in.
Imagine spending hours creating a post, publishing it, and barely getting any interaction. After doing that several times, it is understandable if the person starts wondering whether they are wasting their time.
This is where I believe we, the existing Hive members, have a responsibility.
I have benefited from the knowledge, support and interactions of other Hive users, and I know how much encouragement can mean, especially when you are still finding your feet.
Sometimes, a simple comment can make a newbie's day. A small vote can encourage them to continue. Answering a question instead of ignoring it can help them understand something that was confusing them.
We don't necessarily have to support every newbie financially. Sometimes, attention, guidance and genuine interaction are even more valuable.
But I also believe newbies have a role to play. Hive requires patience. You have to learn, explore, interact with others and understand that building a presence here takes time.
At the end of the day, I don't think the question should only be "Why are newbies leaving Hive?"
We should also ask ourselves:
"What can I do to make the next newbie feel welcome enough to stay?"
Because today's newbie could become tomorrow's community leader, curator, developer or one of the people helping Hive grow.
Let's not just welcome new people.
But let's give them a reason to stay. ❤️
