Hello, anime fans!
I hope you’re all well. Whilst browsing through the lists of the latest anime releases over the past few months, I came across one that caught my eye because of its premise – which, although clichéd, made me laugh due to one particular detail that I’ll explain below. This anime is called: Futsutsuka na akujo de wa gozaimasu ga, (known in English as Though I Am an Inept Villainess)
To begin with, this is a romance and court intrigue anime, the sort where characters compete for a prince’s love, set in an imperial court inspired by ancient China, complete with an emperor, empress, prince and concubines.
The story is set in the fictional Kingdom of Ei, where five prominent noble families each send a young lady from their household to become an imperial consort; whoever wins the young prince’s heart will eventually become empress. The protagonist, Reirin, is the most beloved maiden at court; she is the empress’s niece, noble, beautiful and kind, qualities which have won her the prince’s affection.
On the other hand, there is the villain, Keigetsu, nicknamed the ‘court rat’. Resentful of the constant scorn she receives from those around her, she ends up venting her hatred and anger on Reirin. What nobody knew was that Keigetsu is a powerful sorceress; so, coveting everything Reirin possesses, she casts a spell that causes them to swap bodies, whilst also placing a restriction on Reirin that prevents her from revealing the truth. The big problem is that Reirin has an extremely weak and sickly body, so the body swap wasn’t the best idea, haha 😅
On the other hand, Reirin can’t contain her joy, as her frail body meant she couldn’t manage even the simplest of tasks. Now Reirin has Keigetsu’s strong body, whilst Keigetsu is trapped in Reirin’s frail one; even so, she doesn’t stop trying to kill Reirin, so Reirin must do everything she can to survive.
I really like the court intrigue, with its scheming, deception and secrets, where the focus is primarily political. It’s shown from a female perspective how the women who are part of the court must survive through intelligence, cunning and alliances, manoeuvring in a place where even your food is poisoned. The story focuses on both Reirin and Keigetsu, with each experiencing what it’s like to be in the other’s shoes – which only goes to show that nothing is as it seems.
I like this because it allows both protagonists to understand each other’s physical and emotional perspectives, enabling them to explore the complex relationship between them; I also like the theme of magic and Ki, which I don’t usually see in this sort of anime. Although the story centres on Reirin and Keigetsu, there is also a male lead character: Shin, the captain of the ‘Eagle Eyes’ and the crown prince’s half-brother, who gradually grows closer to Reirin and helps her.
And whilst both Reirin and Keigetsu seem to be living the superficial dream of each other’s lives, the problems, secrets and intrigues appear never-ending. The other members of the court are playing a dangerous game of power and survival.

Espero que se encuentren bien. Revisando las listas de los últimos estrenos en anime de estos meses, me encontré con uno que me llamó la atención por su premisa que aunque cliché, me hizo reír por un detalle en particular que ya explicaré a continuación. Este anime se llama: Futsutsuka na akujo de wa gozaimasu ga, (conocida en inglés como Though I Am an Inept Villainess)
Para empezar, este es un anime de romance e intrigas palaciegas, del tipo donde se compite por el amor de un príncipe y transcurriendo en una corte imperial inspirada en la antigua China, con emperador, emperatriz, príncipe y concubinas.
La historia surge en el ficticio Reino de Ei, donde cinco familias nobles e importantes manda cada una a una doncella de su familia para convertirse en consortes imperiales y quien se gane el corazón del joven príncipe eventualmente se convertirá en emperatriz. La protagonista Reirin, es la doncella más amada de la corte, es sobrina de la emperatriz, noble, hermosa y amable lo que hizo que se ganara el afecto del príncipe.
Por otro lado, está la villana Keigetsu, apodada como la rata de corte, resentida por los constantes desprecios de quienes la rodean, termina descargando su odio y su irá en Reirin. Lo que nadie sabía es que Keigetsu es una poderosa hechicera, por lo que deseando todo lo que posee Reirin, ejecuta un hechizo donde termina intercambiando cuerpos con Reirin, donde además le pone una restricción que no le permite revelar la verdad. El gran problema es que Reirin posee un cuerpo extremadamente débil y muy enfermizo por lo que el cambio de cuerpo no fue la mejor idea jaja😅
Por otro lado, Reirin no aguanta su felicidad, pues por su cuerpo débil no podía hacer ni la más simple tarea. Ahora Reirin posee el cuerpo fuerte de Keigetsu, mientras que Keigetsu queda atrapada en el cuerpo débil de Reirin; aun así, no deja de intentar matar a Reirin, por lo que debe hacer todo lo posible por sobrevivir.
Me gusta mucho el juego de la corte, con intrigas, engaños y secretos donde el enfoque es más que nada político. Se muestra desde una perspectiva femenina cómo las mujeres que forman parte de la corte deben sobrevivir con inteligencia, astucia y alianzas, maniobrando en un lugar donde hasta la comida te la envenenan. La historia se enfoca tanto en Reirin como en Keigetsu, donde ambas experimentan lo que es estar en los zapatos de la otra, lo que solo demuestra que nada es lo que parece.
Esto me gusta, porque permite a ambas protagonistas entender la perspectiva física y emocional de la otra, permitiendo explorar la relación compleja que hay entre ambas, además me gusta el tema de la magia y el Ki que no suelo ver en este tipo de animes. Aunque la historia se centra en Reirin y Keigetsu, también existe un personaje que ejerce como protagonista masculino, que es el capitán de los “Ojos de Águila” y medio hermano del príncipe heredero, Shin, quien se acerca poco a poco a Reirin y la ayuda.
Y aunque tanto Reirin como Keigetsu parecen vivir el sueño superficial de lo que es vivir la vida de la otra, los problemas, los secretos y las intrigas parecen no acabar. Los demás miembros de la corte juegan un juego peligroso de poder y sobrevivencia.
