👻 The Backroom on Margarita Island, the Rattan Plaza shopping centre [Esp/Eng]

Hello, hello, lovely Hive community!

I recently went out with some friends to go bowling 🎳 and have a bit of a competition. On Margarita Island, there are only two places to go bowling: La Vela (which is the island’s most exclusive shopping centre) and the one in the Rattan Plaza shopping centre (a place that used to be very popular but is now rarely visited, despite being right next to Mango Bajito and Daka). We went to the one at Rattan, and I must say I hadn’t set foot in that shopping centre for many years. I remember that when I was a child, almost everyone used to go there, but these days it’s a bit run-down, even though several shops are still open and it’s located in one of the island’s busiest shopping areas; even so, because of its architecture and appearance, the place feels like a back room, ha ha ha.

The thing about this shopping centre is that, as soon as I set foot inside, it was like travelling back in time, specifically to the late 90s and early 2000s. When we went in, there was literally no one there, apart from the odd person we bumped into, so the atmosphere felt a bit desolate. You could tell from the architecture and paintwork that it hadn’t been refurbished in years and, although it was kept very clean and tidy, it looked dated – or rather, old-fashioned – which I partly liked because it was like seeing the look of the early 2000s, but it also hinted at how little the place was visited.

We went straight to the bowling alley, where there were actually quite a few people, although we had to wait a while to play. The thing is, we started playing at 7 pm and ended up leaving at nearly 10 pm, and, my goodness, at that time of night the shopping centre – as it’s massive and it was just us and a few people who’d stayed behind in the bowling alley playing – had a spine-chilling, ‘Backroom’-style atmosphere and all that. The staircases seemed endless and, from certain camera angles, it looked as though they led nowhere.

There were large halls and, on either side, narrow, dark corridors littered with abandoned objects; you couldn’t hear a single sound, apart from the little waterfall on the ground floor, and when we headed for the exit, the door was locked, which meant we had to go all the way round again and look for the back exit.

I really enjoyed bowling there; it was fun, and as I’ve been a fan of horror films and the Backrooms series ever since I used to watch them on YouTube on the Kane Pixels1 channel, going in and out of the shopping centre felt like a realistic Backrooms experience – only without the creatures chasing us, the analogue horror, and with an easy way out that led us to go and find some dinner, because all that playing had made us hungry, hahaha.
