Hey Scrobbles! I hope you're all doing well. Today I'm bringing you this interesting X-Men issue called "The Amazing X-Men," which was released on March 1, 1995, and is the first issue of the miniseries. This miniseries, written by Fabian Nicieza, was released due to the reality-shattering event in the canon X-Men Vol. 2 series. This comic is therefore fundamental not only as a collector's item but also for understanding the X-Men universe. In 1995, with Xavier's death at the hands of his own son, Legion, in the past, and his failure to create the X-Men, Apocalypse took advantage of this time paradox to seize control and make the Age of Apocalypse a canonical event in the timeline, not just an alternate future like Cable or those shown in X-Men #97. This marks the first appearance of an alternate universe in X-Men, putting Earth-616 on hold so that Earth-219 could begin bringing this event to life. So, it's a very interesting comic, drawn by Andy Kubert and inked by Matt Ryan.
If Xavier is dead on Earth-616 and obviously doesn't exist in this alternate future, then Magneto is the one who survives in this alternate future to keep alive the dream of mutant resistance and a peaceful existence with the humans who have been annihilated by Apocalypse's terror. So, Magneto will be the new leader of mutants in general for this saga, and who will be the rebels? We see a devastated North America where humans are persecuted or treated as slaves by Apocalypse's regime. The High Human Council plans a desperate evacuation strategy to Eurasia before launching a full-scale nuclear attack against the continent controlled by the villain. Some characters we'll see in this issue are Storm, Iceman, and Quicksilver.
Nicieza does an incredible job of plunging the reader headfirst into the action of the conflict unfolding in this chaotic Age of Apocalypse universe. He offers a fresh perspective on a group of mutants led by someone other than Xavier. Andy Kubert's art is undoubtedly one of the comic's most spectacular aspects—vibrant, aggressive, fast-paced, and distinctly '90s—providing an incredible contrast and perfectly expressing what the story demands. For Marvel, this saga was a massive gamble, launching a miniseries within a universe that had been on hiatus for four months, which angered many fans. However, after receiving the comics, they saw that a dystopian universe had been created, with new versions of the mutants and truly excellent crossovers. This makes it essential reading for understanding the magnitude of the Age of Apocalypse.
If you're a fan of the X-Men and haven't read this issue, I highly recommend you seek it out and examine it closely, not only to enjoy the art but also to understand a truly incredible story from its very foundation. So, comic book fans, see you in the next post.
