The Silent Witness
Twenty years have passed since that event that marked me. I sweep the same floorboards, and I can still smell the rancid scent of my own sweat from that night. I laugh when I think about people who believe that theater or music is nothing but lights and applause; however, I know what hides behind the curtain: sewer rats in silk dresses.
I saw them. I saw those two vipers corner the girl in the dressing room. I saw the knowing smiles, the mockery, and how they kicked her out of the singing group to prevent her from having the solo. The poor girl said nothing. She swallowed her tears, grabbed her bag, and clenched her jaw. I was outside changing a light bulb and thought, “I hope someone gives them what they deserve.”
I shouldn't feel so much anger over a teenage problem that has nothing to do with me. It's just that I couldn't help feeling powerless as I watched such cruelty and malice. Because, of course, that wasn't the first time. On numerous occasions, I had witnessed them tormenting her and trying to overshadow her in every performance. And this time, they got away with it.
I don't know what tricks they used to convince everyone to expel her from the group. It was a terrible humiliation in front of everyone present, including the producer and a teacher who was there. No one deserves such questionable treatment at such a young age. I hope her parents do something.
But she didn't need anyone to defend her. She was filled with anger, and what happened was the last straw.
I caught her sneaking into the dressing room before the performance. I sensed that the girl was up to something, and she was: she sprinkled itching powder on the microphones and inside the collars of the dresses belonging to those two shameless girls. I burst into such a fit of laughter that I had to cover my mouth so she wouldn't realize I was watching her.
God forgive me, but I felt an enormous sense of satisfaction when, halfway through the first verse, they began twisting in agony, scratching themselves compulsively, and singing off-key, making fools of themselves in front of a packed theater. People thought it was part of the show and laughed, until they saw the girls' parents pulling them off the stage.
The perfect revenge. Well done, little one! I thought to myself.
What I didn't know was that the revenge wasn't over. That day, the girl decided to go even further, and this is where the memory becomes murky and my rancid sweat returns.
The young girl knew about Patricia's phobia. She wanted to give her the fright of her life and put the animal among her belongings. But city people don't know much about the wilderness, so she grabbed the first little dark snake she found. She thought it was a water snake, the kind that doesn't do anything. She had no idea it was a real coral snake, and when Patricia put her hand into her bag, the scream was not one of fear but of pain.
It only took a few minutes for her tongue to turn black, while the ambulance remained stuck in traffic. Amid the chaos, between the paramedics' screams and the other girl scratching herself until she bled, I searched for the culprit. She was behind the scenery, watching everything from the shadows. Her joy at the lesson she had given her bullies turned into a face frozen in terror.
She turned her head, and our eyes met. She saw that I was holding the can of itching powder in my hand, and I saw in her eyes the instant she realized that I had discovered her. Patricia died in the theater hallway amid the screams of her parents, who didn't understand what had really happened.
I said nothing to the police. What for? To ruin the life of the young girl who had the courage to stand up for herself, even if she had gone too far? I threw the can into the incinerator and remained silent.
Now I see her on giant screens, having become a global star. She sings like an angel and appears on television wearing designer dresses. Sometimes she comes by here when she visits the country, surrounded by her bodyguards. On the few occasions when our paths have crossed, she lowers her head discreetly and avoids looking me in the face.
I am certain that, in those few seconds, we both hear the sirens again and relive the moment when the forensic investigators removed Patricia's body. We both know what happened and the silent pact we made two decades ago.
