SOMEONE ELSE'S SCARS

Sorlene never went out without wearing her black silk gloves. People didn't know it, but they were her armor, her only shield against a world that felt far too heavy. With every new person she met, the same uncomfortable question always came up: “Why do you wear gloves all the time?” or “Why don't you show your hands?”

She was already used to it and limited herself to giving an automatic, coldly rehearsed answer:

“It's a requirement of my profession. Antique objects retain moisture and mold on their surfaces. I have very sensitive skin and allergies, so the gloves protect me.”

In the back room of her clandestine workshop, the gloves lay on the table while she carefully handled an old music box. Unlike other artisans, Sorlene didn't need any kind of mechanical tools, for her “instruments” were her own hands.

She possessed a gift so powerful that it was both her downfall and her curse in equal measure: she had the ability to absorb, extract, and relocate human trauma, guilt, shadows, secrets, and all the darkness within a person with nothing more than a touch of her hands.

People came to her in secret, paying astronomical sums for her to remove the weight of their wounds or regrets from their minds and anchor it inside everyday objects. Because her gift was so special and unusual, she wasn't visited only by respectable people… Corrupt judges, hitmen, criminals, and politicians often came to see her.

And whenever she received that kind of filthy company… she couldn't help but feel the danger it posed to her and her family. She knew that if she refused to help them, the consequences would be disastrous, although she had no idea just how far things might go. The very power she possessed protected her. She was worth more alive than dead.

Sorlene religiously stored every memory people brought her inside jars, pens, inkwells, cups, books… any object would do. She tried to work as quickly as possible so she wouldn't contaminate her mind with other people's pain for too long. Every time she touched someone, she could perceive everything about that particular person; hence, outside her workshop, she made a point of wearing gloves.

Strangely enough, she had no traumas or the kind of darkness that the rest of humanity tended to harbor. She assumed that this inner “stillness” was the result of her own gift, which shielded her from all evil. She also had no vivid memories of her early childhood, only a few scenes that came and went without providing any useful information about her biological parents.

In any case, that had never mattered to her. Her adoptive family had given her so much love that Sorlene had never felt excluded or different, unlike other adopted children who try to uncover their origins.

That same night, the entrance bell jingled with a metallic clink. Don Víctor walked in, a regular client and the most influential man in the metropolis. He funded hospitals and charitable foundations with enormous sums of money, and his mere presence commanded respect. Even so, whenever he visited the workshop, his eyes betrayed the panic and desperation eating away at him inside.

“I need you to take it away, please,” Víctor said, placing a tiny, tarnished silver box on the counter. “It happened two hours ago. I can't live with this in my head for another second.”

Sorlene looked at him in silence and nodded. With a slow movement, she extended one hand and placed it directly against Víctor's forehead.

The transfer was extremely violent. The man's pain, guilt, and horror slipped through her hand, climbing up her arm until they flooded her nervous system. Sorlene clenched her teeth to endure the tide as she guided the dark current toward the little silver box resting nearby.

Within seconds, the weight lifted from Víctor's mind. The man shuddered and let out a sigh of relief. He left a check on the table and walked out without looking back, his eyes clear and his expression light.

Sorlene was left alone and hurried to find a place for the silver box among the other objects. As she settled it onto the shelf, her fingers lightly brushed its silver surface. A chill ran down her spine.

Usually, when she extracted memories and sealed them inside an object, the object lost its immediate “power.” But the residue left behind by Víctor's mind was excessively dense; it was as though it refused to evaporate. Intrigued, Sorlene placed her fingertips on the little box again to make sure the seal was complete.

But she wasn't prepared for what happened the moment she touched the object. A flash of images burst into her mind, leaving her frozen. This was no longer the panic of a recent crime… The vision opened up a window into the past, moving backward through decades of money, public respectability, and false philanthropy.

She saw Víctor's private office, filled with documents yellowed with age, old books, and more papers scattered across the floor… and then, suddenly, a brutal revelation left her breathless.

Don Víctor wasn't just a client frightened by a crime he had committed the night before. He was the man who, twenty-eight years earlier, had signed the legal papers for her adoption.

Sorlene recoiled, stumbling backward until she collided with the counter and nearly fell to the floor. Her heart was in her throat, and her face burned with rage. Her “adoptive family,” whom she loved and respected so deeply, hadn't chosen her by chance. Víctor had bought her when she was barely a baby. Not out of kindness, but because her gift was already clearly manifesting itself.

He had raised her the way someone trains a secret weapon of war. Her entire life and her supposed inner stillness had been meticulously engineered by him. Every time he and his henchmen committed an atrocity, they came to her to unload their darkness, erase their guilt, and carry on as though they were spotless.

Every now and then, they brought her ordinary people so she would believe she was truly helping humanity; however, it was all part of the same macabre plan to keep her from discovering the truth. Her workshop, which only moments earlier had seemed like a safe haven, now revealed itself for what it truly was: a glass cell.

Sorlene stared at her own bare hands as an absolute, icy rage washed over her, completely replacing her fear. She picked up Víctor's silver box with her left hand and, with her right, began taking down from the shelves all the objects containing the darkest memories she had stored over the years.

If Víctor thought he could keep manipulating her at will, he was about to discover what happened when the monster was returned to its creator.

Sorlene put on her black silk gloves, turned off the workshop lights, and locked the door. For the first time in her entire life, she would step out into the street without hiding her powers, ready to remind that man exactly where the darkness he had been carrying on his back had come from.

Gracias, @vezo

Te deseo un bonito fin de semana.
