A Hug Through a Ball: The Nostalgia of a Friendship Without Distance 🤗

There are objects that, at first glance, seem ordinary, yet hold beautiful memories within them. To many people, a ball is simply a toy forgotten somewhere in the back of a closet. To me, however, it is a time capsule and an invisible bridge connecting me to someone very important in my life: one of my best friends, one of those people who become sisters even without sharing a blood relationship.

Our story began many years ago, in the classrooms of our school. She moved to Caracas from another state right at the beginning of our first year of high school. At first, we did not talk very much, but little by little, we grew closer until we built an incredible friendship. I never imagined that the new girl who had just arrived would eventually become such a close friend.

Over the years, we collected laughter, secrets, shared homework, and that unique bond that can only be built during childhood and adolescence. Without a doubt, she is one of the best people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Not only because of the wonderful person she is, but also because of the professional she has become, something that fills me with pride.

However, as has happened to so many families and friendships in our country, life eventually took us in different directions. She emigrated shortly after we graduated from high school, and that was one of the hardest goodbyes I have ever experienced. She was the first of my friends to leave. Her departure left an immense void and a sense of nostalgia that, in one way or another, still stays with me.

Her parents were among the first to understand that the situation in the country had become unsustainable and irreversible, and that building a future outside Venezuela might be the best decision for their children. They made the same choice for her older brother. After she emigrated, she came back a couple of times, and I was fortunate enough to see her again, although every reunion also carried the inevitable sadness of knowing that, sooner or later, she would have to leave once more.

Despite the physical distance and the thousands of miles between us, her presence remains very much alive in my life. Whenever something difficult has happened in Venezuela, she has always been one of the first people to call me. During that nationwide blackout that lasted five days, she messaged me immediately; unfortunately, I could not respond right away because there was no phone service.

And when the tragedy of June 24 of this year occurred, not even ten minutes had passed before my phone was already ringing with her name on the screen. Moments like these are when you realize that distance can really be nothing more than a matter of geography. Her loyalty knows no borders or time zones.

This small fabric ball that I am sharing with you today was a gift she gave me before leaving, and over time, it became my most cherished good-luck charm. As you may have noticed, it is one of those little balls used to play a game called “fuchi.” I used to love playing it, although I have to admit I was not exactly very good at it.

This small, colorful handmade object has an immeasurable value to me because it carries a part of a chapter of my life that will never return and, above all, a friendship that managed to survive one of the greatest changes two people can experience: no longer sharing the same place.

That is why this is one of my most meaningful objects. Besides bringing back countless memories of that wonderful friendship we were fortunate enough to enjoy while we still lived in the same country, it represents the strength of our bond and the ability of genuine love and affection to remain intact despite time, change, and distance.

This ball is like our friendship: it can get lost, take a few hits, and even spend a long time tucked away, but it never loses its shape or its essence. Every time I hold it in my hands, a whirlwind of emotions comes over me. I admit that sometimes I cry because I miss her so much, but just a few seconds later, I end up laughing out loud as I remember all the mischief, conversations, and happy moments we shared during our school years.

That is the most beautiful thing about this object: it not only reminds me of a person, but also of who I was when we were together. It reminds me of a time in my life when we still did not know how many changes awaited us, how many goodbyes we would have to face, or how many miles would eventually separate us from the people we loved. “We were happy, and we didn't even know it.”

This ball connects me to gratitude, nostalgia, and the purest kind of love that can exist in a friendship. It reminds me that there are people who, even when they are no longer physically by our side, continue to hold a permanent place in our lives.

Because true friendship is not measured in miles, in how often we see each other, or even in how many conversations we have. It is measured by the absolute certainty that, whenever something happens, there will be someone on the other end of the phone asking: “Are you okay?”

Every time I look at this little ball, I feel as though I am actually holding a hug. A hug that began many years ago at a school in Caracas and that, despite the distance, is still going strong.

Invito a @naath a participar 🤗. Un abrazo a la comunidad.
