Hello, dear Hive Diy community! I hope you are having a great day today.
Today, I’m sharing another Pokémon fan art piece I created. This time, it features the character Marnie (known as Roxy in some regions) along with four Pokémon that fit her rock-themed aesthetic. In the game, she is the sister of a Gym Leader who is a rocker, so she shares a very similar personality. I’ve been really wanting to draw characters from my favorite game again, and this rock-and-roll theme felt like a perfect concept for an illustration.
PROCESO | PROCESS
- Alright, the Pokémon I’m illustrating today are: Obstagoon (on the right), Toxtricity (on the left), and Morpeko (the little ones at the bottom, which have two forms).
- To start, I created a rough, broad sketch to establish the overall structure, then refined the poses I had in mind. I wanted the Pokémon in the background to look aggressive and intimidating, while giving Marnie a defiant, bold look. As for the Morpeko at the bottom, I depicted one as shy—reflecting its "normal" form—and the other as a bit more aggressive.
- After fleshing out the poses, I cleaned up the sketch and moved on to the final line art—which, admittedly, took a bit longer! Haha.
- Once the line art was finished, I moved on to the base layer for all the characters. I always start with a gray layer as the foundation for each character’s colors; this makes it much easier to color the individual parts later, as I can simply use a "clipping mask."
- With the gray base layer in place, I colored each character one by one, using their original, official color palettes. I started with the character herself, then moved on to the Pokémon.
- Once I had the base colors, I duplicated all the color layers and merged them into one. I then set that layer to "multiply" mode to darken the colors and give the drawing more presence.
- We’re now reaching the final stage of the drawing. To do this, I created a "clipping mask" set to "multiply" mode on top of the color layer. I added a shadow using a dark blue color—placing it in the upper section because I felt it made the characters at the top look more aggressive.
- Above that, I added another "clipping mask" to incorporate highlights using white. This helped accentuate certain areas and added an extra level of detail to the piece.
- Finally, I created one more "clipping mask" set to "vivid light" mode. I used this to add highlights to the eyes of the girl and the two Pokémon on either side. This really brings out that intimidating gaze; personally, I think it’s the perfect finishing touch.
¡Y listo!
- And that’s it! That wraps up today’s drawing. Personally, this is the best piece I’ve created in this style. I really enjoyed working on it, and I think the result is incredible. With that said, see you in the next post!
