Reseña de la película "Politiki Kouzina" (2003) [ESP / ENG]

Fanis Iakovides, un profesor de astronomía y astrofísica residente en Atenas, estaba a punto de irse de vacaciones cuando recibe la visita de un viejo amigo de su abuelo Vassilis, quien vivía en Estambul y era dueño de una tienda de especias. Luego de décadas sin encontrarse, finalmente nieto y abuelo iban a volver a verse. Sin embargo, una llamada telefónica lo cambió todo: su abuelo cayó enfermo.

Aquella noticia sume a Fanis en el recuerdo de su infancia en Estambul. Recuerdos felices, recuerdos destrozados por una política que afectó las relaciones de dos países históricamente relacionados, llevando a deportaciones masivas y a un juego de resistencia por parte del propio Fanis a soltar lo que él consideraba su refugio.

Con música de Evantia Reboutsika y bajo la dirección de Tassos Boulmetis, Politiki Kouzina (Un toque de canela en España, La sal de la vida en Latinoamérica) es un filme que nos habla de la nostalgia, del recuerdo de una vida simple, de la conexión profunda que tenemos con determinadas personas.

He de señalar que no es la primera vez que he visto esta película. Tuve la oportunidad de verla en mis días de la facultad como parte de una materia relacionada con la antropología moderna. La había disfrutado por el tipo de temáticas que manejaban: la cocina, la política y la identidad nacional. En esta segunda vez miré la película desde la perspectiva de la pérdida y de la resistencia.

La pérdida tiene tres representaciones: la migración forzada, la muerte y la aceptación de que aquello que amaste en juventud forma parte del pasado. La primera llega en la infancia de Fanis, cuando las tensiones diplomáticas entre Turquía y Grecia se volvieron volátiles; a excepción de su abuelo, toda la familia de Fanis fue deportada a Grecia. La segunda llega décadas después, con la muerte de Vassilis en el hospital. La tercera llega bajo la forma de Sayme, el amor de infancia de Fanis; en la vida adulta, Sayme está casada con Mustafá, quien era un médico militar. Fanis albergaba la esperanza de estar con ella, pero al final no se pudo dar.

Esos sucesos transformaron de manera significativa en Fanis la forma de ver el mundo, llevándolo a aceptar que hay cosas que es mejor soltar.

La resistencia llega en la niñez en diversas formas, destacándose principalmente la cocina. Fanis desarrolla habilidades de cocina dignas de un chef, para horror de los adultos, principalmente los griegos; en el caso de los docentes, éstos veían en la cocina turca una falta de respeto a la identidad nacional e instaron a su padre, Savvas, a que lo llevara a sitios históricos que pudieran inspirarle algún sentimiento nacionalista.

Como podemos ver, esta película invita mucho a reflexionar sobre la vida y nos recuerda que muchas veces hay que darle un pequeño toque de especia para poder seguir adelante. Esa especia puede ser la aceptación, la resignación, la pérdida o el optimismo, dependiendo de cada persona.

Fanis Iakovides, an Astronomy and Astrophysics professor residing in Athens, was about to go to vacation when he receives the visit of an old friend of his grandfather Vassilis, who lives in Istanbul and is an owner of a spice shop. After decades apart, the grandson and grandfather were finally going to see each other again. However, a phone call changed everything: his grandfather fell ill.

That news plunged Fanis into memories of his childhood in Istanbul. Happy memories, memories shattered by a policy that strained relations between two historically linked countries, leading to mass deportations and a struggle on Fanis’s part to let go of what he considered his refuge.

With music by Evantia Reboutsika and under the direction of Tassos Boulmetis, Politiki Kouzina (A touch of spice) is a film that talks about nostalgia, the memory of an ordinary life, of the deep connection we have with determined people.

I have to point out that it's not the first time that I watch this movie. I had the opportunity of watching it in my college days as part of a subject related with modern Anthropology. I enjoyed it due to the toype of themes it covered: cuisine, politics and national identity. In this second time I watched it through the perspective of the loss and the resistance.

The loss has three representations: the forced migration, the death and the the realization that what you loved in your youth is now part of the past. The first comes during Fanis’s childhood, when diplomatic tensions between Turkey and Greece became volatile; with the exception of his grandfather, Fanis’s entire family was deported to Greece. The second comes decades later, with Vassilis’s death in the hospital. The third comes in the form of Sayme, Fanis’s childhood sweetheart; as an adult, Sayme is married to Mustafa, who was a military doctor. Fanis had hoped to be with her, but in the end, it couldn't happen.

Those events significantly changed the way Fanis saw the world, leading him to accept that there are some things it’s better to let go of.

Resistance manifests itself in childhood in various forms, most notably in the kitchen. Fanis develops cooking skills worthy of a chef, much to the horror of the adults, especially the Greeks; as for his teachers, they viewed Turkish cuisine as a lack of respect for national identity and urged his father, Savvas, to take him to historical sites that might inspire some sense of nationalism in him.

As we can see, this movie invites us so much to reflect on life and remind us that many time we have to give life a touch of spice in order to move forward. The spice can be acceptance, resignation, loss or optimism, depending of each person.
