Continuing with this month’s theme, I would like to pay tribute to the music that not only my father listened to, but my mother as well—who passed away just a few weeks ago. I believe this will be one of the best ways for me to remember her....
To begin with, let me tell you about a singer I remember with great fondness—one my father used to listen to back in those days. He left such an indelible mark on my childhood memory that I still enjoy his music today, almost as if I had been born in that era. I am referring, of course, to the great Antonio Aguilar—the renowned Mexican singer who captured so many hearts during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. I believe my father liked his music not only because it was lively and cheerful—the kind of songs perfect for revelry and drinking—but also because some of his tracks were ideal for serenades. From what I’ve been told, and from the little I recall myself, my father loved roaming the streets, singing serenades. To put it plainly, he was a man of his time—a "macho" type who loved to party. Since he had a good voice, he had no trouble drawing people’s attention, especially that of the ladies—much like Antonio Aguilar himself did in his most famous films. I’m thinking specifically of the song "El Aventurero," which describes a daring man who lived entirely for fun, without a thought for the consequences. My father didn’t go quite that far, but my mother certainly suffered a great deal because of his carousing.
As for my mother's musical tastes, the truth is they were very limited. She wasn't much of a music listener, however, she did tell me several times that she liked the music of a particular singer. Every time I heard him, she would tell me to turn up the volume and she would delight in the singer's voice. This singer was none other than Demis Roussos. Perhaps it was his soothing voice or the fact that, despite being a Greek singer, he had several songs in Spanish that she could understand. The point is that his music relaxed her, and unlike the Bee Gees (whom she detested and told me sang like little cats, haha), when I listened to Demis, she did enjoy it and even told me to turn up the volume. As you can see, there is quite a big contrast in tastes between the party music that Dad sometimes listened to and the quiet music that Mom liked, although, as I said in my last participation, Dad also liked other singers (who greatly influenced my musical tastes) such as Julio Jaramillo and Lucho Barrios (a singer whose music was also perfect for serenades)...
