Was meint ihr?

What do you think of Anthropic’s push to slow down AI development in the U.S.? Dario Amodei promptly received support from Sam Altman and Elon Musk. Trump, however, sees it differently and rejects the plan.
I don’t think AI development can be slowed down significantly, if the U.S. were to do this, it would only be overtaken even faster by China and open-source models.
Some also think this is an attempt to use regulation to force open-source models, which are catching up rapidly and can be operated much more cost effectively, out of the market.
Another explanation for the alarmism is that AI labs are burning through money like crazy and haven’t been able to develop a sustainable business model, yet at the same time they want to go public with trillion-dollar valuations. IPOs have apparently been postponed.
On the other hand, the frontier models are actually getting better and better, and there’s a real danger that, despite safeguards, they could be used for criminal activities or by state actors to develop weapons or conduct cyberwarfare.
And then there’s the doomsday scenario where AIs become so powerful that they render jobs obsolete en masse or wipe out humanity, which is why some want to slow down their development.
I think, however, that the call is more likely driven by economic considerations, and it’s not realistic to significantly slow down AI development.
What do you think? Would you slow down AI development, if so why?
