Video gaming may be beneficial to mental and cognitive health after all

Was sagt ihr dazu?

Characterizing the cognitive and mental health benefits of exercise and video game playing

For a long time, video games didn’t have a good image in the mainstream and were either ridiculed or dismissed as an addiction. Some politicians even wanted, or still want, to ban video games because they are potentially harmful to young people.

In the meantime, however, this view seems to be shifting somewhat, at least from a scientific perspective, and the topic is now viewed in a more nuanced way.

Sure, there are still risks, but gaming also seems to have a positive impact not only on reaction time but also on mental and cognitive health. As always, it depends on many factors, what games you play, for how long, etc. but overall, this assumption sounds plausible.

What do you think? Do you think gaming has a much greater positive impact than the mainstream has previously assumed?

I think gaming is great for the brain. I find that learning to do things uses your brain, and you never know when something you did in a game can help you in the future. for example, I learned about scams from MMOs, and it has stuck with me since. Getting scammed out of stuff really teaches you something.

time changes and I think with everything going on after Covid, the earthquakes, Ai, how fast things are changing people are starting to realize many things and one of them is that what ever set your mind in another world actually makes you forget about your problems at least for a few minutes and thats all it takes, specially now days that ppl can make $$$ out of gaming and still ppl didnt believe its a new economy in our world, it just takes time for some to understand how fast things changing, there is nothing wrong with gaming itself, unless it derails you from your responsibilities but thats not on gaming thats on the person, like anything else in life

I made for my studies, a 20 pages thing about games and microtransaction in games, basically what happens to some people that end up depressed or addicted to games, well its not really the games themselves that are addicting its just that in a lot of cases people are isolated socially/having other problems in life and thus have an excessive use of the video games -> these people tend to also smoke/drink/etc or replace it by playing games.

(little addon for the video games is benefical to mental health, in case someone says you can get addcited to it)

  • I believe that the game is better for good old people than sudoku table
