Welcome to another edition of “Tuesdays” here in the “Music” community on Hive. And once again, I’d like to introduce you to someone who would be celebrating his birthday today.
Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, born in 1945, was one of the founding members of one of the most iconic American bands of all time. The Grateful Dead, founded in 1965, brought something to the world stage that had never been seen before. Gifted with the ability to tell stories through their music and possessing a truly unique sound—with instruments that danced to the rhythm of one another—they were known for their live performances, where they took improvisation to the next level. By interacting with the audience, they were among the most beloved bands in America during the 1960s and 1970s.
Their style, drawing from blues, folk, country, gospel, and many other genres, brought a unique diversity to their fans and to those attending their live shows.
The band did not survive the death of one of its members in 1995, when lead singer Jerry Garcia passed away in August.
Although, in their long 30-year career, they only managed to reach the Top 40 on the sales charts with the song “Touch of Grey” in 1987, the Grateful Dead consistently sold out concerts throughout their existence—thanks not only to the loyalty of their fans but also, in large part, to their infectious stage presence!
