Another Tuesday, another birthday 🎂
I’ve been doing this for quite some time now, and today, for my 106th edition, I’m featuring a British musician, composer, and singer named Bruce Douglas, who is celebrating his 71st trip around the Sun today!
At first, based solely on his name—which I found on a website I often check for a simple, clear list of musicians celebrating birthdays—I wasn’t even planning to feature him. But I ended up choosing him anyway, because his musical style really stood out in the band he was part of in the ’70s and ’80s, called “The Jam.”
The band “The Jam” was initially influenced by British bands of the 1960s.
The band that featured the bassist celebrating his birthday that day was heavily influenced by—and had a sound somewhat similar to—“The Who,” “The Kinks,” or even the iconic “The Beatles,” incorporating original elements of a more psychedelic rock style with a very strong bass line and a driving beat!
Many bands flourished in England at that time, such as the aforementioned “The Who” and “The Kinks,” but also “Joy Division,” which left its mark on many generations. I can say that even though I recognized them and listened to them all—even when I was younger—the fact that I was born in 1978 meant they were cult bands I’d listen to when I went out at night, but they weren’t part of the music charts of my time, obviously.
