REVIEW (3) (1).gif

First and foremost—why on earth do they make the titles so long? Some of them practically tell the entire story! Anyway, moving on: today I’m talking about another romance anime that wrapped up last season. While I did feel the story was lacking—especially when it came to fleshing out the characters—I don’t think it’s entirely bad. That’s why I’d like to discuss this series and share some thoughts on what could have been improved—just my personal take, of course.

"Kimi o Koi Suru Ki wa Nai" to Itta Jiki Kōshaku-sama ga Nazeka Dekiai Shitekimasu

Premiering in July, under the direction of Hitoyuki Matsui and the animation studio Zero-G Grass, the series brings to the screen a story of romance, fantasy, and slice-of-life.

As for the plot…

The story follows the life of Elsa, the daughter of a noble family that has fallen on hard times—though they aren't exactly destitute, they do face certain hardships. Unexpectedly, she receives a marriage proposal from Julius, the heir to a powerful ducal house and a royal advisor, who is also a highly sought-after young man. For Elsa, this proposal is a godsend that will allow her to save her family and improve the situation of her territory; however, immediately after the wedding, Julius—who until that moment had been unfailingly kind—makes his position clear with absolute coldness: "I have no intention of ever loving you."

Far from becoming bitter or holding a grudge, Elsa accepts the rules of the game with a smile and goes about her life with a calm demeanor, winning the affection of everyone around her through her simplicity and kindness. However, things get complicated when Elsa’s genuine warmth begins to break down the cold barriers Julius had built following years of trauma. Caught in his own trap, the once-distant duke falls hopelessly in love with his wife, showering her with excessive adoration, constant attention, and sudden bouts of jealousy. Yet, Elsa took his initial warning so literally that she remains completely blind to his feelings, interpreting every romantic gesture as nothing more than simple kindness. Amidst hilarious misunderstandings—with a husband desperate to win back the heart he once rejected and a young woman standing firm in her resolve—a major question lingers: will Julius manage to tear down the wall of romantic indifference he himself constructed, or will Elsa continue to view her passionate husband as merely a partner of convenience?

Personal opinion

The premise is hardly fresh or groundbreaking; it follows the classic formula of a protagonist who initially claims to want nothing, only to fall for someone in the blink of an eye. Still, it’s a perfectly fine watch for passing the time or having something on in the background while you work. It avoids getting bogged down in stifling political drama, focusing instead on the couple’s day-to-day life within the mansion—so, if that’s the kind of vibe you’re after, this might just be the anime you’ve been looking for. As for the characters, while Elsa might come across as a bit dim, she’s actually quite practical and resourceful. Her noble nature, disarming honesty, and complete lack of awareness regarding palace intrigue serve as both her greatest charm and a constant source of jealousy and exasperation for Julius. This creates a great dynamic with our young duke, who is a *tsundere* through and through.

As for the animation, it’s quite simple—it doesn’t feature the kind of aesthetic style seen in *Violet Evergarden* or similar works, where you really notice the color palettes and well-executed scene transitions. Still, it’s straightforward and serves its purpose: it effectively establishes the setting and brings the characters into focus. Even though it’s a familiar trope, I’ll never get tired of watching a protagonist fall head over heels in love—especially when they were the very person who initially put up a wall in the relationship! Hahaha, it’s a classic that’s always welcome, especially once the jealousy kicks in.

Positive points…

  • Solid comedic dynamic: The contrast between Elsa’s ignorance and Julius’s romantic desperation creates highly amusing situations.
  • Charismatic protagonist: Elsa stands out for being pragmatic, cheerful, and determined—a far cry from the cliché of the helpless heroine.
  • Character development: It is very satisfying to watch Julius shed his cold exterior and reveal a more vulnerable side.

Negative points…

  • Predictable formula: It does not reinvent the aristocratic romance genre or the "marriage of convenience" trope.
  • Reliance on misunderstandings: If you don’t enjoy romances where characters take a long time to speak clearly, the lack of communication may become repetitive.
  • Conventional animation: It meets the aesthetic requirements and includes comedic expressions, but it does not stand out with any visually striking sequences.

The score I give it…

7/10 Story │ 7/10 Animation │ 7/10 Sound │ 8/10 Character design │ 7/10 Overall

While it doesn’t seek to reinvent the fantasy romance genre, it delivers on its promise: offering a heartwarming, entertaining story with great chemistry between the protagonists and some quite effective moments of lighthearted humor.

REVIEW (3) (1).gif

"Kimi o Koi Suru Ki wa Nai" to Itta Jiki Kōshaku-sama ga Nazeka Dekiai Shitekimasu
