Greetings, @Hivediy community…

PORTADA 2 DE HIVE (3).gif

My little dog Oddie has been in training for weeks. At one point, I used a choke collar—one I’d originally bought for my Golden Retriever but never used because I didn't really like it—simply because the trainer recommended it. However, it ended up snapping, and my dog didn't like it either. So, I decided to make one using macramé; the material is gentler and less harsh. Besides, I don't really like relying heavily on the collar for pulling, so I prefer to balance the tension between the leash and the collar. Anyway, I set to work buying the materials so I could make it as soon as possible.

Materials

macrame1.jpg

  • Paracord: Based on my dog's neck size, I bought 10 meters (though I miscalculated and actually only needed 8 meters—4 meters of each of the two different colors). Since there was a promotion—10 meters for $3.50—I decided to get it all in a single color, but you can use two, three, or more colors depending on the design you want to create. For this specific design, only two colors are used.
  • Rings: You need different sizes so that one can pass through the other. I found two sizes with a noticeable difference; ideally, the size difference should be minimal—just enough for one to fit through the other—but these were the ones I could find. It was a bit of a challenge to source them, as I needed to avoid rings that weren't fully closed, which would have snapped under the tension.
  • Lighter
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape.

Step by step

STEP 1: Measure the diameter of the dog's neck.

To figure out the total amount of paracord needed, you multiply the diameter by four—though four and a half is also an option; it’s better to have too much than not enough. If anyone knows how to accurately calculate the required cord length based on neck diameter, I’d appreciate the info. I don’t have photos of myself measuring my dog’s neck because he wouldn’t sit still for it, so I just eyeballed it.

macrame2.jpg This is the one I made for him quite a while ago.

STEP 2: Tie a knot.

We take the rings and place them at the end, spacing them according to the neck measurement—though in my case, I made it longer because it was intended to function as a slip-collar (spoiler: it turned out much longer than it should have). You can use tape to hold the rings in place while you work. If you are using two-colored cords, you can join them by melting the tips and pressing them together—they will fuse automatically—but since I am using a single color, I simply find the midpoint of the 8-meter length, pass it through the ring (as shown in the following images), and tie a knot.

Next, we pass the ends of the cords through the top ring, as shown in the image, to tie the knots; we will call the left cord "cord 1" and the right cord "cord 2." We take "cord 2" and pass its end underneath itself, forming a loop; then, we pass the end through that same loop again, pull it tight, and the knot is complete. We repeat the same procedure with cord 1, ensuring the loose ends of the cords remain on the outside.

STEP 3: Knitting…

If you are using cords of the same color—so you don't get mixed up like I did—I attached a small piece of tape to cord #2 to mark it as the one that will move the most (you'll see what I mean). Now that the knots are securely in place, let's move on to the weaving:

macrame5.jpg

Cord 1 will be the one positioned in the middle of the weave; pass cord 1 over the two taut cords, forming a sort of loop.

Pass cord 2 over cord 1, then under the two taut cords, and finally over the small loop formed by cord 1; pull cord 2, and as it gets close, pull the ends of both cords. I will also include short videos showing the process.

For the next side, we do the same: cord 1 moves to the right, so it lies over the main strand; cord 2 goes over cord 1 and under the main strand, then passes through the loop formed by cord 1. We pull it tight. Always remember: cord 1 (regardless of which side it is on) is the one that goes over the main strand, and cord 2 is the one that passes underneath it.

We repeat this process until we reach the other ring.

STEP 4: Finish the knitting.

macrame7.jpg

macrame6.jpg

Then, continue weaving until you reach the other ring; once there, if you have any excess cord, trim it—leaving about a finger's width of slack—and flip the necklace over to the side that will face downward. Burn the ends and fuse them to the weave (if using cords of different colors, attach the ends to the matching color); in my case, I also stitched them down for extra reinforcement.

Bottom line.

macrame9.jpg

macrame8.jpg

Just a side note: I attached a small metal rod to it because I have a bit of an issue with my dog—if a new item doesn't last long, he rejects it immediately. I tried sewing on a small metal rod, but that didn't work; the idea was for the rings to be the same size so it would stay hooked around his neck even when the leash wasn't attached. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, so now I have to carry the collar around with me everywhere so it picks up my scent.

On top of that, it turned out quite long; I measured the length at 70 cm, whereas the neck size is 58 cm, so the maximum length should have been between 62 and 65 cm. Anyway, here is the result; using this weave, you can make either a collar or a leash—simply by replacing the rings with clasps. To see a collar made this way, I invite you to check out the one I made about two years ago.

macrame10.jpg

Oh, by the way, I used the leftover cord to make myself a bracelet—since I had some clasps lying around—so I could match his; this method works well if you want to make bracelets in this style, especially for men.

PORTADA 2 DE HIVE (3).gif

  • Encendedor
  • Tijeras
  • Cinta métrica.

Paso a Paso
